Indonesia: Papua Development Creates a Prosperous Society
By: Kristina Ohee*
Papua Island, with its abundant natural resources and rich cultural diversity, has long been the center of attention in Indonesia’s development dynamics. Amid complex geographic and social challenges, the government has taken important steps to accelerate development in the region.
Economic development in Papua has become the government’s main focus in its efforts to create a prosperous society. With abundant natural resources, especially in the mining and energy sectors, Papua has great potential to become a driving force for the national economy. Investment in infrastructure, such as roads and airports, has been considered a crucial step to open access to remote areas and facilitate economic growth.
Apart from infrastructure, increasing access to education and health services is also an integral part of Papua’s broader development vision. It is hoped that these programs will not only improve people’s welfare directly but also open up new opportunities for Papua’s young generation to contribute to the development of their region.
Papua’s development must also be seen in the context of increasing regional autonomy and recognizing the rights of indigenous peoples. Giving authority to the Papua regional government to manage natural resources has been a positive step in strengthening economic and political independence.
Efforts to overcome the backwardness of the land of Papua have been President Jokowi’s commitment at the start of his administration, together with Vice President Ma’ruf Amin. In just three years of his administration, Jokowi has laid out two approaches to efforts to develop Papua. First, the infrastructure approach. Second, the human resources approach. This step is a form of Jokowi and Ma’ruf Amin’s love and is expected to become the foundation for sustainable development on the land of Cenderawasih.
President Joko Widodo also firmly emphasized the importance of synchronization between central and regional development policies as the main key to achieving any development carried out throughout the country. President Jokowi highlighted the need for this harmony, which remains a challenge in development projects in Indonesia.
The President also emphasized the importance of dialogue and consultation between the central and regional governments before planning and implementing any development projects. The President emphasized that every development plan must be considered together with the regions, so that local needs and regional readiness can be better taken into account. President Jokowi emphasized that all development policies must be implemented in an integrated and coherent manner from the central to regional levels.
A similar approach was also adopted by the Papua Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Mathius D. Fakhiri, who emphasized that Papua’s development requires collaboration and cooperation from all parties. Even though Papua has great natural potential, its people still face big challenges in achieving prosperity. Concrete steps such as Special Autonomous Region (Otsus) status have been taken by the government to accelerate development in Papua, but without full support from the local community, these efforts will not be fully successful.
Regarding development in Papua, it is important for the community to provide strong support for all policies introduced by the government. This support covers not only economic aspects, but also social, cultural and environmental aspects. When the community actively supports development plans carried out by the government, it can be ensured that there will be strong synergy between the government and the community in achieving common goals towards progress and prosperity.
Community support for development policies in Papua is manifested through active participation in local decision-making processes, involvement in development programs, as well as moral support for steps taken by the government to advance the region. By building consensus and cooperation between government and society, the positive potential for development can be maximized, while existing challenges and obstacles can be overcome effectively.
By strengthening cooperation between the government, community and Papuan youth, as well as through strong synchronization between central and regional policies, Papua can become a milestone in sustainable and prosperous development for its entire population. Through strong collaboration and seriousness in overcoming challenges, Papua can carve out a better future, make a significant contribution to Indonesia’s progress, and realize the ideals of a safe, prosperous and advanced Papua.
