Indonesia: Maintain Unity and Integrity Ahead of the 2024 Regional Elections

Entering 2024, Indonesia will again be faced with the long-awaited local democratic party, namely the Regional Head Election (Pilkada). Various regions in the country are preparing to elect new leaders who will bring change and progress. In this situation, maintaining unity and unity in society becomes a non-negotiable necessity. From Bekasi to West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), regional leaders invited the community to remain united and face the regional elections with wisdom and peace.
In Bekasi, the Acting Mayor of Bekasi, Raden Gani Muhammad, delivered an important message to his citizens during the Eid al-Adha celebration. He reminded the public to maintain unity and integrity, even if there are differences in political choices. According to him, people may differ in their choices. As long as everything is addressed with a cool heart and calm mind.
Raden Gani Muhammad also emphasized the importance of choosing leaders who are in accordance with Islamic teachings, namely leaders who are honest, trustworthy, intelligent, and able to convey orders and prohibitions. This message is important because in the atmosphere of regional elections, emotions and tension often increase among the community. By prioritizing Islamic values, it is hoped that society can remain wise and not be divided.
Meanwhile, in NTB, the Acting Governor of NTB, Drs. Then Gita Ariadi also emphasized the importance of maintaining unity and harmony ahead of the regional elections. In his sermon during the Eid al-Adha celebration at the Hubbul Wathan Islamic Center Mosque, Mataram City, he invited the public to deepen their faith and devotion to Allah SWT and strengthen social solidarity.
The Acting Governor of NTB also appealed to the public to welcome this democratic party with joy and brotherhood. This shows that regional elections should be a moment of happiness and not a trigger for division. Apart from that, in his sermon, Gita Ariadi also invited Muslims to pray for safety and success for the Hajj pilgrims who were performing their worship in the holy land. This is an effort to strengthen ties and foster a sense of unity within NTB’s multicultural society.
The messages from the two regional leaders are very relevant and important in the context of the regional elections. Regional head elections are often an area of intense competition and often cause friction within society. In an atmosphere like this, unity and integrity are the keys to maintaining stability and peace.
Society must realize that differences in political choices are normal and part of democracy. The most important thing is how each individual can respond to these differences wisely and still maintain brotherhood.
