Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation with Pacific Countries, Indonesia Will Hold the Second IPPP
Jakarta – The House of Representatives stated its readiness to hold the 2nd Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) or forum for meetings at the parliamentary level of Indonesia and Pacific countriesChairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) DPR RI, Fadli Zon, revealed that the IPPP Forum was first held in 2018.
However, the follow-up meeting was hampered by Covid-19 until the DPR RI became the host of the 2022 IPU.
“So now we can hold this second meeting and we hope that there will be quite high and active participation from the Parliament of Pacific countries,” he said.
He added that a number of countries had confirmed their presence and the plan was to be followed by other Pacific countries.
“Some of their parliamentary chairs have also confirmed that they will attend, including us inviting embassies from Pacific countries here, namely Papua New Guinea and Fiji,” he said.
He believes that the Second IPPP Session in 2024 will be an open forum. Because, this meeting will open dialogue and communication between Indonesia and Pacific countries, especially regarding the issue of Papua.
“Most of us already know them. So if there are related issues, for example about the situation in Papua and others, we can explain them clearly. Of course this (forum) is important for our national interests,” he concluded.
On a different occasion, Fadli revealed that the 2nd IPPP session aimed to discuss various issues related to sustainable development goals or SDGS. This also includes the threat of climate change and other issues.
“Cooperation for prosperity, especially regional connectivity in the Pacific, including how to open up more inclusive development in the future. So, of course the discussion is related to the SDGs and the potential for what can be done between Indonesia and Pacific countries,” said the Chairman of BKSAP DPRI RI.
Previously, DPR Chair Puan Maharani explained that IPPP had positive goals in various fields. Including connectivity and maritime.
“This forum aims to develop partnerships in various fields, including connectivity and maritime, with countries in the Pacific region,” said Puan.
For information, the implementation of the second IPPP will be held on 24-26 July 2024 in Jakarta. Indonesia plans to invite dozens of countries from the Pacific region.
