The simultaneous Regional Elections (Pilkada) on November 27, 2024, will be a significant moment in the journey of democracy in Indonesia. Youth play a central role in ensuring that the democratic process runs smoothly, fairly, and transparently. Various parties, from the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) to representatives and youth organizations, have recognized the importance of youth involvement in the 2024 regional elections.
In East Lombok, the Election Supervisory Board has taken proactive steps by involving youth in participatory oversight for the 2024 regional elections. The Coordinator of the Human Resources, Organization, Education, and Training Division of the East Lombok Bawaslu, Kasmayadi, emphasized the importance of the role of youth, including students, in enhancing political literacy and actively participating in the oversight of the electoral process. This is a concrete example of how young people can be at the forefront of maintaining the integrity of local elections.
Participatory oversight by the youth not only helps monitor the implementation of local elections but also ensures that each stage proceeds in accordance with the applicable regulations. The youth involved in this oversight will have the opportunity to learn and understand political dynamics firsthand, while also contributing to the implementation of clean and transparent elections.
In Jakarta, a member of the DKI Jakarta Regional House of Representatives Commission A, Jupiter, emphasized the strategic role of the younger generation in the 2024 regional elections and encouraged the youth of Jakarta to actively participate in shaping the future of their city. As the capital of the country, Jakarta faces unique challenges and opportunities, and the youth play a key role in steering the future of this city towards a vision of a global metropolis.
Youth have the potential to be agents of change who can bring innovation and fresh ideas into the political process. With their involvement, it is hoped that local leaders will emerge who not only understand the needs of the community but also have a vision to bring about positive change for their region. The participation of youth in the Jakarta 2024 gubernatorial election, for example, can serve as an example of how young people can play a role in determining the direction of development in their areas.
Meanwhile, in West Coast, Lampung, the Secretary of the Communication, Information, Statistics, and Encryption Office (Diskominfotiksan) of West Coast Regency, Elvin Yonanda, emphasized the importance of the role of youth organizations in the 2024 regional elections. Through these organizations, young people can act as a bridge of information between election organizers and the community. They can help disseminate information related to the stages of the regional elections, as well as enhance the knowledge, understanding, and awareness of the public about their rights and obligations as voters.
In this digital era, young people have the advantage of wide access to information. They find it easier to obtain and disseminate information; however, this also means they have the responsibility to ensure that the information shared is true and accurate. With the ability to verify information before spreading it, young people can prevent the dissemination of fake news that could undermine the democratic process.
Despite having great potential, youth involvement in the 2024 regional elections is not without challenges. The biggest challenge may be how to transform the apathy among some young people into a spirit of participation. All this time, political apathy has often been an obstacle for young people to actively engage in the political process. However, with various initiatives such as those undertaken by Bawaslu Lombok Timur, the DKI Jakarta Regional House of Representatives, and the West Coast Communication and Information Office, it is hoped that more young people will be motivated to take action.

Another hope is that youth involvement does not stop at the 2024 regional elections. Their participation must be sustainable, not only in elections but also in various aspects of political and social life in their communities. This ongoing involvement is important to ensure that Indonesian democracy grows healthily, supported by a caring and committed younger generation for the future of the country.
The involvement of youth in the 2024 regional elections also has long-term impacts on achieving the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045. The active participation of youth today is an investment for the future, where they will become the leaders and main drivers of the nation. The Chairman of the NasDem Student League, Raden Gusti Arief, stated that the involvement of young people is also one of the strategies to prepare the younger generation for the Golden Indonesia of 2045.
The young generation currently involved in the 2024 regional elections will become the future leaders who truly understand the importance of democracy, transparency, and public participation. They will bring these values into their leadership, creating a better, fairer, and more prosperous Indonesia.
Youth are a crucial pillar in the success of the 2024 regional elections. From participatory oversight to agents of change, from information bridges to future movers, youth play a central role in ensuring that the 2024 regional elections not only run smoothly but also yield the best outcomes for the community. With active participation and high political awareness, Indonesian youth can become the main force in building a healthy and strong democracy, as well as preparing this nation for Indonesia Gold 2045. Let’s work together to make the 2024 regional elections a success, for a brighter future for Indonesia.
