Indonesia: Realizing Peaceful 2024 Regional Elections for the Sustainability of Democracy

Pilkada or Regional Head Elections are one of the main pillars of Indonesia’s democratic system. Through Pilkada, people have the opportunity to choose leaders who will lead their regions for a certain period. This process is very important because the elected regional leaders will influence policies and programs that have a direct impact on the daily lives of citizens. Therefore, the implementation of Pilkada must be carried out in a fair, transparent, and peaceful manner to ensure that the results truly reflect the will of the people.
A healthy democracy requires people’s trust in the election process and its results. The success of the democratic process is not only measured by the number of voter participation or the final results of the election, but also by the quality of the implementation of the process itself. Peaceful Pilkada is one of the important indicators of the quality of existing democracy. A peaceful atmosphere during the Pilkada ensures that all parties can participate in the election process without fear of intimidation or violence.
To that end, the Indonesian National Police is committed to ensuring that the 2024 simultaneous Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) throughout Indonesia take place peacefully and conducively. One of the steps taken was to hold a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the theme “Police Strategy in the Framework of Securing the 2024 Regional Elections to Create a Safe and Conducive Situation in the East Java Province Region.”
Brigadier General of Police I Komang Sandi Arsana as the Main Public Relations Arranger Level II of the National Police Public Relations Division highlighted the important role of East Java as a large province with cultural diversity and complex political dynamics. He emphasized that the Regional Elections in East Java face special challenges, ranging from potential conflicts to differences in political views.
Brigadier General of Police I Komang Sandi Arsana stated that it is important to strengthen the synergy between the National Police, local governments, and the community in order to create a safe, orderly, and conducive situation. Brigadier General of Police I Komang also emphasized that the neutrality of the National Police is very important in supporting the success of the 2024 Regional Elections and emphasized the need for cooperation between the National Police and the community in maintaining security during the Regional Elections.
According to Brigadier General Pol I Komang, the Chief of Police General Listyo Sigit has instructed the Police to maintain security stability and neutrality during the Pilkada, in order to ensure an honest and fair process. Maintaining security stability and neutrality is not only important for the smooth running of the democratic process, but also to increase public trust in the Police.
During the FGD, plaques were also presented to members of the East Java KPU, the Chairperson of the East Java Bawaslu, and academics. The recipients of the 2024 peaceful Pilkada plaque in Malang Raya provided views on the importance of transparency and voter education to maintain the quality of democracy.
In addition, the Regent of Lamongan, Yuhronur Efendi, also appealed for the 2024 Pilkada to be carried out peacefully and safely, in order to create a conducive atmosphere of security and public order. Yuhronur stated the commitment of all stakeholders to ensure that the 2024 simultaneous Pilkada in Lamongan Regency runs peacefully.
The call for a peaceful election was also conveyed by members of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda), including representatives from the General Election Commission (KPU), Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu), heads of Regional Apparatus Organizations (OPD), and religious and community leaders in Lamongan Regency.
In addition to the peace declaration, a City Security System (Sispamkota) simulation was also held by the Lamongan Police Resort in the context of Operation Mantap Praja Semeru 2024. Lamongan Police Chief, AKBP Bobby Adimas Candra Putra, explained that the simulation was a step to anticipate potential disturbances during the simultaneous Pilkada scheduled for November 27, 2024.
Bobby added that security will cover all stages of the Pilkada, from logistics distribution to campaigning. A total of 1,395 joint personnel from the Police, TNI, and Satpol-PP of Lamongan Regency have been prepared to secure Operation Mantap Praja Semeru. The personnel will be on duty for 135 days until December 31, 2024, specifically to supervise 2,067 Polling Stations (TPS) and ensure security during the voting process.
Peaceful regional elections play an important role in maintaining social and political stability in a region.
