The 2024 Pilkada is an important momentum for democracy in Indonesia, where the younger generation, especially Gen Z and Millennials, have a crucial role. In recent years, both groups have shown increasing interest in politics and social issues, which is an indicator that Gen Z and Millennials are ready to contribute to determining the direction of regional policies through their votes.
Data from various surveys shows that Gen Z, who are currently aged between 18 and 25, and Millennials, who are aged 26 to 41, are significant voter groups. According to the General Elections Commission (KPU), it is estimated that more than 40% of voters in the 2024 Pilkada come from these two generations. With such a large number, their participation will greatly influence the election results.
One of the main reasons for the increasing political participation among Gen Z and Millennials is easier access to information through social media. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter or X are not only a means of entertainment, but also a tool for disseminating political information and campaigns. Many regional head candidates are utilizing social media to reach young voters, with interesting and relevant content, creating a space for dialogue between prospective leaders and the younger generation, which encourages them to participate more actively in the election process.
Political observer from Malikussaleh University, M. Akmal said that the younger generation of Aceh will be the deciding factor in the election of governors, regents, and mayors in the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections. With more than 50 percent of voters dominating from young people, who have great power to change the direction of politics in Aceh.
The younger generation of Aceh, growing up amidst the development of technology and social media, has better access to information and is able to carefully assess the issues in circulation, including negative campaigns that may try to influence public opinion. This ability provides the power to choose more wisely. In an era where information can be disseminated quickly, the younger generation must also be able to sort out which information is valid and which has the potential to be misleading.
In addition, Gen Z and Millennials are known to have high concern for social issues, such as climate change, education, and gender equality, so they tend to choose leaders who have a vision and mission that are in line with these values. Therefore, regional head candidates who want to gain support from the younger generation must be able to convey an innovative and progressive vision, and demonstrate a real commitment to issues that are considered important.
The Coordinator of Prevention, Community Participation, and Public Relations of Kubu Raya Regency, Gustiar emphasized the importance of collaboration between Bawaslu and student organizations to create a clean and democratic election environment. The involvement of students in the election supervision process not only strengthens the democratic system, but also provides valuable political education for the younger generation. Students, as agents of change, have great potential to encourage transparency and accountability in every stage of the election. With a good understanding of the election process, young voters can contribute to preventing violations, both administrative and criminal.
The supervision strategy implemented by Bawaslu, such as direct supervision at every stage of the program, is the right step to ensure that all election processes run according to the rules. However, no less important is the prevention strategy that invites students to play an active role in identifying and reporting potential violations, which shows that the role of students is not only passive, but active and constructive in maintaining the integrity of the election.
Socialization and campaign activities involving the younger generation also need to be increased. For example, holding discussion forums, seminars, and relevant creative events so that it can encourage more young people to not only exercise their right to vote, but also play an active role in campaigns and advocacy on crucial issues.
In this context, the 2024 Pilkada is not just an election for leaders, but also a means for Gen Z and Millennials to express their aspirations and hopes for the future. With high participation from the younger generation, it is hoped that leaders will emerge who are more responsive and sensitive to the needs of the community.
