Indonesia: Beware of Hoaxes and Black Campaigns on Social Media Ahead of Regional Elections

Ahead of the upcoming November 2024 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada), social media often becomes a battleground for information, both true and false. One of the biggest challenges facing society today is the rampant hoaxes and black campaigns that are widely circulated on various media platforms. These hoaxes and black campaigns are deliberately spread to influence public opinion with the aim of discrediting certain candidates or dividing society. In this digital era, society needs to be vigilant and wise in accepting and filtering the information they receive, especially that related to politics.
Hoaxes are fake news created to mislead someone’s understanding of information. In the context of regional elections, hoaxes often aim to form negative perceptions of certain candidates or political parties. This false information is usually packaged in a convincing way so that it is easily believed by people who are less critical in filtering information.
On the other hand, a black campaign is an attempt to bring down political opponents by spreading slander or information that is not based on facts. This black campaign not only harms the candidates being attacked, but also harms the democratic process that should run honestly and fairly.
The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemenkominfo) has prepared strategic steps to deal with the potential spread of hoaxes in the 2024 Pilkada. One of the keys is collaboration with various large digital platforms, such as YouTube, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter). This collaboration aims to ensure that information about regional head candidates and the progress of the Pilkada is monitored directly and quickly by related parties.
The Director General of Information and Public Communication (IKP) of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Prabu Revolusi said that along with the increasing use of social media, the risk of spreading hoaxes that can damage the democratic order is also increasing. Therefore, synergy between the government and digital platforms is an important solution in countering misleading information and maintaining the quality of democracy in Indonesia.
The existence of social media as the main platform for disseminating information makes hoaxes and black campaigns easier to spread. Unlike traditional media that have editing and verification mechanisms, information on social media often does not go through an adequate validation process. This causes the spread of hoaxes and black campaigns to be faster and wider. People who are less critical often become victims of this false information, which can ultimately influence their political preferences incorrectly.
Chairman of the Depok KPUD, Wili Sumarli said that all parties must be careful in spreading information, especially during the Pilkada which is vulnerable to the spread of fake news or hoaxes. The spread of inaccurate information not only harms prospective election participants, but can also trigger unrest in the community. He emphasized that in the democratic process, every piece of information that circulates must be accountable for its truth. The KPUD and Bawaslu will work together with the authorities to monitor and take firm action against parties proven to be spreading hoaxes. With good cooperation from all elements, it is hoped that the Pilkada can run peacefully, fairly, and democratically without being disturbed by misleading information.
No less important is the role of the candidates and their campaign teams. Each candidate must uphold the principle of fair play in campaigning, avoiding spreading misleading information or slandering their political opponents. Healthy political competition must be based on clear programs and visions, not by spreading hatred or false information. Thus, the public can choose a leader who is truly competent without being influenced by false information.
By jointly prioritizing a critical attitude, verifying information, and refusing to spread fake news, we can maintain the integrity of democracy and ensure that the regional elections run peacefully and fairly. The leader who is elected later is a reflection of our maturity in democracy and our wisdom in receiving information.
