Job Creation Law: President Jokowi’s Concrete Steps to Open New Job Opportunities
By: Sari Dewi Anggraini
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) continues to push for concrete efforts to create new jobs in Indonesia, even amidst increasingly rapid global changes. One of the strategic steps he launched was the implementation of the Job Creation Law (UU Ciptaker), which was designed as a foundation to encourage economic growth, increase competitiveness, and accelerate job creation in various sectors.
The seventh Head of State of the Republic of Indonesia, who since the beginning of his administration has been known for focusing on infrastructure development and bureaucratic reform, reiterated his commitment to facing global challenges through this policy.
The leader of the nation who was born in Surakarta City emphasized the importance of opening new jobs, especially amidst the increasingly rapid development of automation. Automation in various sectors continues to increase, and technology is becoming increasingly integral to business operations.
This condition presents challenges for the employment sector, especially related to the shift in the types of jobs needed. President Joko Widodo stated that Indonesia needs to immediately think about the right strategy to create new jobs amidst this phenomenon.
In addition to technological developments, global turmoil and international economic uncertainty are also challenges in themselves. However, President Jokowi conveyed that this nation should not be trapped in excessive worry about the global situation.
While remaining vigilant, Indonesia must focus on domestic improvement efforts, one of which is through the implementation of the Job Creation Law. By implementing a set of policies often referred to as the Omnibus Law, the government is trying to encourage domestic sectors to remain competitive in facing global dynamics.
One real proof of the effectiveness of the Job Creation Law in opening up new jobs is the increasing role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). During the first semester of 2024, investment in the MSME sector reached IDR 127 trillion and was able to create 4.6 million jobs.
Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Yukki Nugrahawan Hanafi, said that MSMEs remain the backbone of the national economy. The government, through the Job Creation Law, has provided significant support for MSMEs in attracting investment and strengthening their position in the market.
The government’s steps to facilitate the licensing process through the Online Single Submission (OSS) are also part of the regulatory reform presented to create an easier and more integrated investment climate.
President Jokowi understands that easy access to licensing and more flexible regulations will attract more investors to invest in the MSME sector. Improving the quality of infrastructure, human resources (HR), and the availability of raw materials are factors that make Indonesia increasingly attractive as an investment destination, which directly impacts the creation of new jobs.
In addition, the implementation of the Job Creation Law has also provided various conveniences for business actors, especially MSMEs. According to the Expert Staff of the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Raden Pardede, one of the important steps taken by the government is to simplify licensing for MSMEs.
The government continues to review and take various strategic steps to accelerate bureaucratic transformation, which will ultimately increase productivity and the contribution of the business sector to the national economy.
Raden Pardede emphasized that the basic philosophy of the Job Creation Law is to provide convenience, certainty, and speed in business licensing matters. With this simplification, MSMEs now have easier access to develop their businesses, expand their markets, and increase their competitiveness in the national and international arenas. The impact of this policy is very significant in strengthening Indonesia’s economic structure, while creating more new jobs throughout the region.
Furthermore, the ease of bureaucracy offered by the Job Creation Law has also encouraged increased investor confidence, both domestic and foreign. This trust opens up new opportunities for the MSME sector to continue to develop and contribute more to national economic growth. This also has a direct impact on increasing the number of workers absorbed by the sector, thereby helping to reduce unemployment in Indonesia.
With progressive policies, President Jokowi has succeeded in creating conditions that support the creation of millions of new jobs through productive sectors, especially MSMEs.
