Government Ensures Papua Regional Elections Run Safely and Smoothly
Jakarta – The government through the ranks of ministries and related institutions ensures that the simultaneous Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) in Papua at the end of November 2024 will run safely and smoothly. Security preparations and strict supervision in the field are being carried out to support regional stability during the election process.
The Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri), Tito Karnavian, emphasized the readiness of the joint team to oversee the Papua Regional Elections. According to him, an integrated security strategy will be implemented, including patrols in vulnerable areas and support from traditional leaders and local communities to maintain stability.
“We have worked with security forces, both from the Police and the TNI, to ensure a conducive situation during the Papua Regional Election process. We want the public to feel comfortable and safe in exercising their right to vote,” said Tito.
On the other hand, the Deputy Chief of Papua Police, Brigadier General Faizal, said that his party had mapped potential vulnerabilities in each region that would hold elections. The Papua Police will strengthen security in areas considered vulnerable and take a preventive approach to community groups to minimize the potential for conflict.
“Security personnel will be deployed as needed in each district and city. We are also working with traditional leaders to help create a safe and harmonious atmosphere,” said Faizal.
Meanwhile, the Division of Prevention, Community Participation and Public Relations of the South Papua Bawaslu, Muhammad Muhajir Sata, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the central government, regions, and related institutions in making the Pilkada in Papua a success. His party also continues to conduct socialization for Papuans regarding the importance of participating in the Pilkada for a better future.
“The key to the success of this Pilkada lies in the synergy of all parties involved. Together with the election monitoring institution, we will ensure that the Pilkada stages run according to plan, without significant obstacles,” explained Muhajir.
The government is committed that the Pilkada in Papua can run smoothly, safely, and peacefully, while also providing an opportunity for the Papuan people to choose the best leader. Through solid coordination between all related agencies, it is hoped that this election will be able to strengthen stability and democracy in Papua. (*)
