The Government’s Seriousness in Realizing a Drug-Free Indonesia

Jakarta – The Joint Team of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of the Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with the Provincial BNN, the Directorate General of Customs and Excise of the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu), and the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Imipas) managed to secure 60.19 kilograms of narcotics from 11 narcotics crime cases in early January 2025. This operation confirms the government’s seriousness in eradicating the illicit trafficking of narcotics which poses a serious threat to society.

The Deputy for Eradication of the BNN, Inspector General of Police. I Wayan Sugiri, explained that in the 11 cases that were uncovered, 44 suspects were arrested. This is real evidence of the increasingly solid synergy between agencies.

“With the large amount of narcotics evidence that was secured, around 39,092 Indonesians have managed to avoid the threat of drug abuse,” he said.

The confiscated evidence consisted of 5.26 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 50.99 kilograms of marijuana, 0.045 kilograms of synthetic marijuana, 3.9 kilograms of cathinone, 63 ecstasy pills, and 2,680 PCC pills. Of the total 44 suspects, among them were correctional inmates, prison officers, two Thai citizens, and two Yemeni citizens who were involved in the attempt to smuggle narcotics into Indonesia.

The suspects were charged with articles in Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics, which include the threat of the death penalty, life imprisonment, or imprisonment with a duration of between six and twenty years. “This step is a concrete form of enforcing the law to combat the illicit trafficking of narcotics,” said I Wayan.

Not only that, he also gave appreciation to the Directorate General of Customs and Excise and the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections for their extraordinary contributions. According to him, this cooperation shows that collaboration is the key to success in handling complex drug crimes.

“BNN hopes that this collaboration can continue so that drug eradication can be carried out more effectively and sustainably,” he added.

I Wayan also invited the public to support the Prevention and Eradication of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (P4GN) program in order to create a Shining Indonesia, as a step towards the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045. Support from the public is very important in creating an environment free from the threat of drugs.

He appealed to anyone who has information related to drug trafficking to immediately report it through the BNN call center at number 184 or through the official BNN website and social media.

“Let’s work together to create a safe Indonesia free from the threat of drugs,” he concluded. []
