Online Gambling Triggers Misappropriation of Tens of Billions in Village Funds
JAKARTA – Online gambling addiction is increasingly showing its negative impacts by triggering various criminal acts, including misuse of public funds such as village funds. The destructive habit of online gambling not only destroys the personal economy, but also encourages perpetrators to seek sources of funds illegally.
In the latest case revealed by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), a number of village heads in various regions were involved in misappropriation of village funds to fund their addiction to online gambling. This phenomenon reflects how serious the threat of online gambling addiction is to state financial governance and social stability.
PPATK Spokesperson, Natsir Kongah, revealed that this misappropriation was discovered through tracing suspicious transactions. “Many village heads in a number of regions received village fund transfers and then used them to gamble online with transaction values between IDR 50 million and IDR 260 million,” said Natsir when contacted by Republika, Monday (20/1/2025).
One example occurred in a district in North Sumatra, where the transfer of village funds to the Village Cash Account (RKD) from the central government throughout 2024 reached IDR 115 billion. Of that amount, around IDR 50 billion was transferred to the personal accounts of village heads or other parties. “More than IDR 40 billion has been misappropriated,” said Natsir.
Natsir added that from the district, PPATK recorded six village heads who were proven to have misappropriated village funds to play online gambling. “At least six village heads are known to have used the village funds to be deposited into online gambling,” he said. One of them is even the head of the district’s village apparatus association (APDES).
PPATK has submitted the results of these findings to law enforcement officers for follow-up. “We have submitted it to the relevant authorities for immediate legal processing,” said Natsir.
The problem of online gambling is now a serious concern for the government. President Prabowo Subianto has ordered the formation of an Online Gambling Eradication Task Force involving various ministries, institutions, and the National Police. To date, the Task Force has successfully confiscated trillions of rupiah allegedly derived from this illegal activity.
“The government is committed to eradicating online gambling, because its impact is very damaging, including the misappropriation of public funds such as village funds,” Natsir concluded.
