Indonesian Government Engages Various Parties to Increase Digital Content Supervision
Jakarta – Efforts to eradicate online gambling continue to be intensified by various parties in Indonesia, ranging from domain management institutions to financial authorities. The Indonesian Internet Domain Name Manager (PANDI) emphasized its commitment to supporting this step through the Indonesia Domain Abuse Data Exchange (IDADX) platform.
PANDI Chairman, John Sihar Simanjuntak, explained that the system implemented by IDADX, namely the Breach Identification and Monitoring Assistant (BIMA), allows automatic detection of misused domains.
“When misuse is found, we immediately provide notification and carry out a suspension procedure for the domain,” he said in a press statement in Jakarta, Sunday (1/26/2024).
Throughout 2024, IDADX managed to identify 89,975 URLs containing online gambling content. John also said that this innovation could be a model for other countries in the Asia Pacific. “This initiative is expected to make online gambling reporting more effective, so that this problem can be resolved immediately,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) is also actively blocking illegal content. As of January 21, 2025, a total of 5,707,952 online gambling content has been successfully removed.
The Director General of Digital Space Supervision of Kemkomdigi, Alexander Sabar, revealed that 24/7 cyber patrols are carried out by the content control team.
“Since 2017 until now, we have handled millions of online gambling content spread across various sites and applications,” he said at the Hearing Meeting (RDP) of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Wednesday (1/22/2025).
Not only domains and digital content, banking is also the focus of supervision. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) reported the blocking of 8,500 bank accounts related to online gambling throughout 2024. The Chief Executive of OJK Banking Supervision, Dian Ediana Rae, emphasized the need to strengthen early detection parameters.
“Banking is now more sensitive in identifying and taking action against accounts related to online gambling,” explained Dian.
These integrated steps reflect the collaboration of various parties in eradicating online gambling.
By strengthening supervision in all lines, from digital content to financial transactions, it is hoped that this illegal practice can be minimized in order to maintain a healthy and safe digital space. []
