Government Budget Efficiency Drives National Development Progress

The government’s steps in implementing budget efficiency are an important strategy in driving national development progress. With policies aimed at maximizing state spending on priority programs, this efficiency aims to ensure that every rupiah spent truly provides significant benefits to the community.
This efficiency policy was implemented as a follow-up to Presidential Instruction Number 1 of 2025, with the Ministry of Finance setting budget cuts in 16 different spending items. The items that were cut included office stationery by 90 percent, ceremonial activities by 56.9 percent, and business travel which was reduced by 53.9 percent. Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, said that this policy is an important step to ensure healthy and sustainable state financial management.
Meanwhile, Paramadina University Economist, Wijayanto Samirin, assessed that this policy can direct national development to be more in line with government priorities. According to him, the reallocation of state spending allows the government to focus on sectors that have a major impact on society. However, he also reminded that the move must be managed carefully so as not to have a negative impact on certain economic sectors, such as hotels and transportation which could be affected by the reduction in official travel.
Although there is a risk of declining economic growth if not carried out carefully, this efficiency policy is considered to still provide many long-term benefits. One of them is ensuring that available funds can be allocated to strategic programs, including the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG), which requires large budget support. This program aims to improve community welfare by providing access to healthy and nutritious food.
Wijayanto considered that it is natural for the public to associate budget savings policies with the need for funds for MBG. However, he emphasized the importance of managing the program transparently and efficiently. Involving MSMEs and local producers in its implementation is considered a strategic step so that budget reallocation continues to have a positive impact on the national economy.
On the other hand, the Chairman of the DPD RI, Sultan B. Najamudin, also expressed his appreciation for President Prabowo Subianto’s steps in ensuring that budget efficiency runs optimally. According to him, this policy shows the President’s deep understanding of the importance of the effectiveness of government spending allocations. The Sultan also mentioned that this efficiency needs to become a culture in government to prevent budget leaks at the central and regional levels.
He assessed that the efficiency policy implemented by the government has a positive impact on the level of public satisfaction with President Prabowo’s performance. In the first 100 days of his administration, the level of public satisfaction reached 81 percent, which is considered an extraordinary achievement. The Sultan said that the President’s steps were a bold breakthrough and deserved to be appreciated.
However, he reminded that this budget efficiency policy should not reduce the quality of public services. The bureaucracy must still be able to provide excellent services even with a tighter budget allocation. The Sultan also emphasized the need for an innovative approach in government activities so that the efficiency carried out actually encourages an increase in the quality of services, not the opposite.
The budget efficiency policy implemented by the government also carries an important message about the responsibility of healthy state financial management. By ensuring that funds are used for things that really have a big impact on society, the government shows its commitment to realizing sustainable and inclusive development.
This step is not only important for maintaining fiscal stability, but also for providing more space for the implementation of strategic programs. With more targeted allocation, the government has a great opportunity to accelerate infrastructure development, improve the quality of health and education services, and support other public welfare programs.
The government’s budget efficiency also reflects the principle of good governance in managing state finances. By cutting items that are considered less of a priority, the government can focus more on programs that have a real impact on society. This policy is expected to be an example for all ministries and institutions in carrying out their duties and responsibilities more efficiently and effectively.
