Government’s Success in Eradicating Online Gambling, the Right Step Towards a Healthy Digital Era

The government through the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemkomdigi) has taken significant steps in eradicating online gambling, which is increasingly rampant in the digital world. This decision is a form of commitment to protect the public from the social and economic impacts caused by this illegal gambling practice.

Within 100 days of the leadership of the Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, Kemkomdigi has succeeded in removing more than 880,000 online gambling-related content from various digital platforms. This is an extraordinary achievement and shows the government’s seriousness in building a healthy and safe digital ecosystem for the public.

Meutya Hafid explained that this effort was made to protect the public, especially vulnerable groups, from the dangers posed by online gambling. It is important for the public to take firm action against online gambling that damages our social and economic order. In the first 100 days, Kemkomdigi succeeded in removing 882,352 online gambling content from various digital platforms. Most of the content comes from blocked websites and IP addresses, while the rest is spread across social media and other digital platforms.

This step not only limits the freedom of online gamblers to move, but also prevents the potential for greater losses in the future. In an increasingly connected world, online gambling often exploits digital gaps to gain profits by targeting vulnerable individuals, especially the younger generation. Therefore, the government needs to act quickly to address this problem before its impact becomes more widespread.

In addition, efforts to eradicate online gambling are also supported by a surprising discovery by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), which revealed that the results of online gambling involving Indonesia reached a very large figure, namely IDR 28 trillion. Unfortunately, much of the money from online gambling is channeled abroad, an illegal transaction that is detrimental to the country’s economy. In dealing with this, PPATK is working with various law enforcement agencies such as the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung), the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), and the National Police to thoroughly investigate the flow of illegal funds and minimize greater economic losses.

The role of PPATK in uncovering online gambling transactions worth tens of trillions of rupiah shows how serious the threat faced by Indonesia in this digital era is. Online gambling not only impacts individuals who are caught up in the game, but also damages the country’s economic system, with large amounts of money being illegally transferred abroad. Without firm steps and good coordination between government agencies, this threat will continue to grow.

The government’s success in eradicating online gambling must be appreciated as the right step towards a healthier digital era. Collaboration between the Ministry of Communication and Digital, PPATK, law enforcement officers, and various digital platforms is an effective model of cooperation to create a safer and more productive digital space. With the removal of a large amount of online gambling content, the perpetrators’ room to move is increasingly limited, and the public’s access to positive information is increasingly open.

However, eradicating online gambling is not enough just by deleting illegal content. The government also needs to continue to raise public awareness about the dangers of online gambling, as well as strengthen supervision on digital platforms. This is important so that the public can be wiser in using the internet, avoid online gambling traps, and choose content that is educational and constructive. In addition, it is important for the government to continue to involve the private sector, especially technology companies, to improve security systems and facilitate reporting of illegal content that is detrimental.

The eradication of online gambling is also in line with the government’s efforts to create a digitally healthier Indonesia. Amid rapid technological advances, challenges related to internet abuse are increasingly real. Therefore, the state must be present to provide protection to the community, especially from content that can damage their personal and social lives. Online gambling, as a form of digital abuse, is not only a matter of financial loss, but also has the potential to destroy the mentality of the younger generation, which should be an important asset for national development.
