Prevent Online Gambling Money Laundering, Government Increases Public Financial Literacy
Jakarta – Increasing public financial literacy related to crypto assets is a collaborative effort that continues to be strengthened between government agencies to prevent money laundering from online gambling. This is done based on the disclosure of the flow of online gambling funds of IDR 28.48 trillion that have been diverted to crypto assets.
Head of the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), Ivan Yustiavandana, stated that his party has coordinated with law enforcement officers regarding the circulation of money from online gambling that has entered the crypto ecosystem.
“The report has been submitted to law enforcement officers for follow-up. We have sent it to the APH,” said Ivan.
Then, Member of Commission XI of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puteri Anetta Komarudin emphasized the importance of financial literacy to prevent the public, especially the younger generation, from being trapped in risky investment schemes without adequate understanding.
“This should be the focus of OJK this year. The fear of missing out (FOMO) phenomenon that encourages many young people to invest in crypto assets without understanding the risks, especially due to the influence of influencers,” said Puteri.
In line with this, Member of Commission XI of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Musthofa asked OJK to tighten supervision of crypto transactions to avoid misuse.
“Young people must be given a better understanding so that they are not tempted by the promise of big profits from crypto assets without understanding the potential risks,” said Musthofa.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of the Financial Sector Technology Innovation Supervisory Agency, Digital Financial Assets, and Crypto Assets of OJK, Hasan Fawzi emphasized that his party has collaborated with PPATK to monitor and suppress the misuse of crypto assets in online gambling money laundering practices.
“Has reduced the use of crypto assets for online gambling money laundering or other violations,” said Hasan
Based on OJK data as of December 2024, the total crypto asset transactions in Indonesia reached IDR 650 trillion, with an average daily transaction of IDR 2 trillion. Strict supervision and increased public education are the main keys to preventing potential misuse of digital assets for illegal activities.
Synergy from all elements of society is a strategic step in strengthening the supervision system and financial literacy to suppress the rate of money laundering through online gambling.
