The inauguration of the elected regional heads resulting from the 2024 Regional Elections is an important momentum in Indonesia’s democratic process. The new leaders who have received a mandate from the people are now faced with a great responsibility to realize the vision and mission that have been promised during the campaign period. The community has an important role in supporting the running of this government so that it can carry out its duties optimally for the progress of the region and the welfare of the people.
Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, emphasized the importance of post-election political stability as part of a healthy democratic process. He reminded that victory in the Regional Elections is not the end, but the beginning of greater responsibility. The elected regional heads are expected to be able to work inclusively by listening to the aspirations of all levels of society, including those who previously voted for other candidates. Thus, the new regional government can run with full support from all elements of society.
He added that regional heads must understand the great hopes of the people who have given them a mandate. Elected leaders must be able to prove that they can work with integrity and provide real benefits to the regions they lead. Public welfare must be the main focus, with concrete steps to overcome economic inequality, reduce unemployment rates, and ensure that public services run effectively.
In this context, regional heads must immediately carry out political reconciliation. Academic and Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Flores, Alfons Fa, assessed that political tensions due to differences in choices during the campaign must be immediately reduced. Reconciliation is the first step for new leaders to create a harmonious and conducive atmosphere. Peaceful resolution of political differences will provide a strong foundation for regional heads in implementing their programs without prolonged disruption.
On the other hand, effective governance also requires active community involvement in overseeing regional policies. The Acting Governor of South Kalimantan, Dr. Roy Rizali Anwar, invited all residents to support and oversee the implementation of the new government. According to him, synergy between the government, DPRD, and the community is a key factor in ensuring the sustainability of development in the region. With support from various parties, regional heads will find it easier to realize the programs that have been designed for the progress of their regions.
The community has a strategic role in ensuring transparent and accountable governance. Public supervision will encourage regional heads to adhere to the principle of integrity and implement policies that are in the interests of the people. In addition, community involvement in voicing aspirations and providing input on regional government policies will also enrich the decision-making process so that the resulting policies are more in line with needs in the field.
The biggest challenge facing regional governments today is improving community welfare amidst economic conditions that are still full of challenges. Therefore, newly inaugurated regional heads are expected to be able to immediately realize policies that can improve economic conditions, create jobs, and increase public access to quality public services.
One thing that needs attention is the continuity of development programs. Regional heads must be able to continue programs that have been running well and make improvements to policies that are not yet optimal. Sectors such as education, health, and infrastructure are the main priorities in improving the quality of life of the community.
Elected regional heads must demonstrate innovative leadership in order to be able to face the challenges of the times. They must be able to find solutions that are not only short-term, but also have a long-term impact on community welfare. The use of technology and data-based approaches in policy making is becoming increasingly important to ensure that every decision taken is based on proper and accountable analysis.
The new government must also pay attention to the aspect of public participation in the development process. Community involvement in the planning and supervision of regional policies can increase transparency and effectiveness of the implementation of development programs. The community must be given space to contribute, both through development planning meetings (musrenbang) and other consultation forums.
