Appreciating MBG for Pregnant Women to Ensure Adequate Nutrition

Appreciating the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) as a real step in ensuring adequate nutrition for pregnant women and toddlers is an important part of realizing a healthy and quality generation in Indonesia. This program is not just assistance, but a long-term investment for the future of the nation. By ensuring adequate nutritional intake for vulnerable groups, it is hoped that the stunting rate can be reduced significantly, in line with the government’s target to reduce the prevalence of stunting to 18 percent by 2025.
The Minister of Population and Family Development and Head of BKKBN, Wihaji, emphasized that MBG was initially designed for school children, but at the direction of President Prabowo Subianto, the scope of the program was expanded to include pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers. This is done as a form of government attention to the groups that need the most nutritional intake to support optimal growth and development since in the womb.
The distribution of nutritious food to pregnant women and toddlers has its own challenges, different from programs intended for school children. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Culture is proud to collaborate with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) and form a Family Assistance Team (TPK) so that assistance reaches the homes of beneficiaries directly. This collaboration is also strengthened by a cooperation agreement that ensures that the distribution of assistance is right on target and is not misused by other family members.
Deputy for Promotion and Cooperation of BGN, Nyoto Suwigyo, explained that MBG has two beneficiary segments, namely students from PAUD to SMA and non-student groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers. The program for pregnant women and toddlers is still in the simulation stage, with a distribution target that continues to be increased until the end of 2025. Each beneficiary is verified and validated before receiving assistance so that the program runs optimally according to the available funding.
Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Ashabul Kahfi, highlighted that one of the main problems faced by school children is the habit of not eating breakfast before leaving for school. Based on data submitted by the President, around 41 percent of students do not get food intake before doing activities at school.
This not only affects children, but also malnourished pregnant women, who are at risk of giving birth to children with stunted growth. Therefore, MBG is a strategic solution that not only targets school children, but also pregnant women to prevent stunting early on.
The Free Nutritious Meal Program is one of the main priorities of the Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka administration. In less than two months after being inaugurated, this program has been running and has successfully reached more than two million children. The government is targeting a much wider coverage with a target of reaching 82 million children and pregnant women. Ashabul Kahfi emphasized that this program is a major commitment of the state in realizing a healthy and quality generation.
To ensure the sustainability of this program, the government does not consider the amount of the budget as a burden, but as an investment for the future of the nation. Good health, especially nutritional fulfillment, is a major factor in creating superior and highly competitive human resources. Without adequate nutrition, children will have difficulty concentrating in school, which ultimately affects their level of intelligence and productivity in the future.
Despite criticism of the program, the government remains committed to finding the best solution to address the problem of nutrition and stunting. Community participation is essential for the program to run optimally and achieve maximum results. With the cooperation between the government, BGN, and the wider community, it is hoped that MBG will be able to create a smart, healthy, and productive next generation.
As part of a strategic program, MBG not only provides short-term benefits in the form of adequate nutrition for pregnant women and toddlers, but also creates long-term impacts on human resource development in Indonesia.
By ensuring that every child receives sufficient nutritional intake since in the womb, Indonesia can achieve its vision in 2045 to become a developed country with a healthy and competitive golden generation. Therefore, this program should receive full appreciation and support from all parties in order to realize a more prosperous nation.
