Government’s Success in Blocking 993,114 Online Gambling Content
Jakarta – The government through the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemenkomdigi) has successfully blocked 993,144 online gambling content until mid-February 2025.
This firm step was taken to keep the public away from the dangers of illegal activities that can damage morals and society. This policy has received widespread appreciation, because it aims to keep the digital space safe, healthy, and productive for all levels of society.
In an effort to combat the rampant online gambling, Kemenkomdigi has blocked various platforms involved in the distribution of gambling content. Based on the data released, the blocked content includes 905,031 online gambling sites and IP addresses, 308 TikTok accounts, 41,441 Meta (Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp), 28,896 file sharing, 10,582 Google/YouTube, 5 MangoLive, 6,313 X (Twitter), 5 Line, 562 Telegram, and even one application on the App Store.
This blocking is carried out to cut off public access to online gambling practices, both through sites and applications.
Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid emphasized that this policy is part of the Government’s commitment to creating a safer digital space.
“President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that handling online gambling must be stricter. Of course, we want to continue to improve security in the digital space. Therefore, we continue to do various ways, one of which is by blocking online gambling sites on various platforms,” said Meutya.
The main purpose of this blocking is to prevent people from getting involved in online gambling, which can cause major financial and psychological losses. In addition, this policy is also expected to keep the digital environment healthy and productive, and protect the younger generation from negative influences that can damage their future.
The government’s success in blocking almost one million online gambling content is certainly not an easy result to achieve. This shows the government’s serious commitment to eradicating illegal practices that are growing rapidly, along with advances in information technology.
In this context, coordination between related institutions, including the Ministry of Communication and Information, the police, and international institutions, is very important to face the global challenge of online gambling.
