Government Affirms Commitment to Eradicating Corruption
By: Andika Pratama
The Indonesian government under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto has affirmed its commitment to eradicating corruption, which has long been a major obstacle to national development. In the international forum World Government Summit in Dubai, the President expressed his concern about the level of corruption in Indonesia, which he considered very worrying. Therefore, he promised to use all the authority given by the constitution to take firm action against corrupt practices in all sectors.
President Prabowo emphasized that corruption is the root of various setbacks, especially in the education, research, and development sectors. The existence of corruption not only hinders economic growth, but also damages the government system that should be transparent and have integrity. In his speech, he said that clean government is the main key to the progress of the nation, and this can only be realized through concrete steps in enforcing the law firmly against perpetrators of corruption.
In line with this commitment, Indonesia’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) has increased from 34 in 2023 to 37 in 2024, and Indonesia’s ranking has risen to 99th out of 180 countries assessed by Transparency International. Although this increase shows progress, President Prabowo emphasized that this achievement is far from enough.
His government will continue to improve state governance by ensuring that corruption eradication is carried out systematically and sustainably.
As a concrete step, President Prabowo summoned the Head of the Development Control and Special Investigation Agency (BPPIK), Aris Marsudiyanto, to discuss the corruption eradication strategy. During the meeting, the President gave direction for BPPIK to ensure that development runs smoothly and is free from corrupt practices. In addition, this institution was also asked to take firm action against various forms of legal violations such as illegal mining and illegal lobbying practices that can harm the state.
The Head of BPPIK emphasized that his party has been given a mandate to eliminate corruption in various sectors, especially in strategic government projects. In addition, he stated that his institution will synergize with various ministries and other institutions to ensure that law enforcement runs solidly and effectively. This inter-agency collaboration is expected to create a more transparent and accountable environment in the management of state finances.
The government’s commitment to eradicating corruption is also supported by strengthening regulations and bureaucratic reform. The government has encouraged the digitalization of public services to reduce the gaps for corruption in the bureaucracy. This digitalization system is expected to increase efficiency and transparency in public services, so that the practice of extortion and abuse of authority can be significantly reduced.
In addition, the government also prioritizes a preventive approach through education and increasing public awareness of the dangers of corruption. Through anti-corruption campaigns and socialization programs, it is hoped that the public can be more active in monitoring the use of the state budget and dare to report if they find indications of irregularities. Public participation in monitoring the running of government is an important element in realizing clean and integrated governance.
In his efforts to create a clean government, President Prabowo also emphasized the importance of exemplary behavior from state officials. Every official in the government environment is required to demonstrate integrity and professionalism in carrying out their duties. There is no tolerance for those who are proven to have committed acts of corruption, and strict sanctions will be given to anyone who violates the principles of good governance.
Eradicating corruption in Indonesia is not only the government’s task, but also requires cooperation from all elements of society. The business world, academics, media, and civil society organizations have an important role in ensuring that the government system runs transparently and responsibly. With strong synergy between the government and society, it is hoped that Indonesia can continue to improve its corruption perception index and create a more conducive environment for economic growth and national development.
The success of eradicating corruption will also have a direct impact on increasing investment and global trust in Indonesia. With clean governance, investors will be more confident in investing their capital in Indonesia, so that economic growth can be further accelerated. This is in line with President Prabowo’s vision to make Indonesia a developed country that is highly competitive in the international arena.
