Government Supports Increasing the Capacity of MSMEs to be Globally Competitive
By: Ricky Rinaldi
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are a great opportunity for anyone who wants to start a business. This sector has become the backbone of the Indonesian economy, contributing greatly to job creation and national economic growth. The government has shown a strong commitment to encouraging the growth of MSMEs with various progressive policies, especially in the rapidly developing digital era.
The Minister of MSMEs, Maman Abdurrahman, emphasized that MSMEs have an important role in the national economy. If MSMEs grow, our economy will also be stronger. Therefore, the government continues to create a conducive ecosystem for small businesses to grow, both in terms of capital, training, and digitalization.
The Minister of SOEs, Erick Thohir, also added that SOEs have a strategic role in supporting MSMEs. According to him, the government has built a special platform for MSMEs that has been running for almost five years. This is real proof that the government is serious about providing the best facilities for small business actors so that they can move up a class.
The government’s seriousness in supporting MSMEs can be seen from the various flagship programs that have been launched. Starting from easy access to People’s Business Credit (KUR) with low interest, digital market development, to business mentoring programs that ensure that business actors do not feel like they are walking alone. The government is also actively collaborating with various parties, including startups and universities, to provide training and guidance for MSMEs to be more innovative and competitive. In addition, the government has expanded the scope of assistance for MSMEs in rural areas, ensuring that every entrepreneur, both in urban and rural areas, has the same opportunity to develop.
In facing the digital era, the government has taken strategic steps by encouraging digital transformation for MSMEs. With increasingly wide internet access, MSME actors have a great opportunity to penetrate national and international markets. The government is working with various well-known e-commerce platforms so that MSMEs get greater exposure. This step is also in line with the government’s efforts to increase financial transparency in the MSME sector, so that access to funding becomes easier. This digitalization also helps MSMEs in operational efficiency, from digital marketing, inventory management, to technology-based financial records.
Capital is often the main challenge in starting a business. Realizing this, the government has provided various financing schemes, such as People’s Business Credit (KUR), grants, and investment programs specifically designed to support the growth of MSMEs. With this policy, business actors now have more options to obtain capital, which was previously a major obstacle in business development. Not only that, the government also provides wider opportunities for MSMEs to participate in government procurement of goods and services. With part of the state budget allocated for MSMEs, opportunities for small business actors are increasingly wide open.
In addition to financial support, the government is also committed to simplifying the bureaucracy of business licensing. Simpler regulations and fiscal incentives provided to MSMEs that have legal entities are concrete steps in creating a friendlier and more efficient business ecosystem. In addition, innovation continues to be encouraged through collaboration between MSMEs, universities, and research institutions. This aims to ensure that MSMEs in Indonesia not only develop quantitatively, but also have high competitiveness in the global market.
The existence of MSMEs not only has an impact on economic growth, but also has a significant social role. Many community-based MSMEs are able to create jobs and empower the surrounding community. With full support from the government, this sector is increasingly open to anyone who wants to contribute to national economic development. MSMEs are now an inclusive sector, providing opportunities for all groups to innovate and develop, regardless of background or age. Young entrepreneurs’ initiatives are also growing with the support of the government, encouraging more new entrepreneurs to dare to step forward and contribute to the local and national economy.
