Prabowo is Firm! No Amnesty for Drug Dealers
Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has emphasized that the Indonesian government is firm against drug dealers. Minister of Law and Human Rights, Supratman Andi Agtas, ensured that there is no amnesty for drug dealers in the 2025 prisoner amnesty policy.
Member of Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Edison Sitorus, also expressed his objection to the possibility of granting amnesty for drug convicts.
“We very likely will object if there is an amnesty for drug dealers. I, very much object if there is an amnesty for them, this must be considered,” said Edison.
Responding to this, Minister of Law and Human Rights, Supratman Andi Agtas emphasized that from the beginning the government has set clear criteria regarding who is entitled to receive amnesty.
“(There are) criteria that we have reported from the beginning and approved by the President. The first is people who violate or are convicted of a crime related to the ITE Law, and that is only related to insulting the head of state or the government,” he explained.
“Outside of that, no. So if it’s ITE, but it’s related to individuals, it doesn’t feel right,” he continued.
This decision is in line with the government’s steps in tightening supervision of drug crimes that have damaged many young generations in Indonesia. Based on BNN data, around 312 thousand teenagers in Indonesia have been exposed to drugs, while the turnover of the drug business reaches hundreds of trillions of rupiah per year.
With the government’s firm stance that does not provide loopholes for drug dealers, it is hoped that the war against drugs will be more effective and provide a deterrent effect for perpetrators of drug crimes.
