Improving the quality of education and health services in Papua is part of the government’s major commitment to improving the welfare of the people in the region. Papua, with its abundant natural resources, still faces various challenges in terms of human development, especially in the fields of education and health. Therefore, various policies and programs have been designed and implemented to ensure that every Papuan citizen has better access to quality education and health services.
In the education sector, one of the main challenges faced is limited access to educational facilities, especially in remote areas. Many schools still lack teaching staff, adequate learning facilities, and limited infrastructure that makes it difficult for children to receive optimal education.
The government has also collaborated with various parties, including non-governmental organizations and international organizations, in improving the quality of education in Papua. Training programs for teachers, curriculum development that is more appropriate to local conditions, and the use of technology in learning are some of the steps implemented to improve the effectiveness of education in this region. With support from various parties, it is hoped that Papuan children will not only get better access to education, but also have greater opportunities to develop and contribute to the development of their region.
As part of the commitment to the advancement of education in Papua, the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) and Pertamina EP Papua Field (PEP Papua) Regional East Indonesia Subholding Upstream Pertamina handed over assistance to two schools in Sorong Regency. This program is part of the Community Development Program (PPM) in the field of education, which aims to improve access and quality of learning facilities in remote areas. Assistance was given to SMA Negeri 6 Sorong Regency in Seget District and SMP Negeri 28 Sorong Regency in Kampung Waliam, Salawati Tengah District.
The Principal of SMA Negeri 6 Sorong Regency, Agustina Lek, directly received assistance in the form of 10 computers to support the development of a computer laboratory. She is very grateful for the assistance provided to improve the quality of technology-based learning.
Head of the High School/Vocational High School Education Division of the Sorong Regency Education Office, Andreas Taameng said that he greatly appreciated the support of SKK Migas and PEP Papua in improving educational facilities and infrastructure in remote areas. With computers and other supporting facilities, students will be better prepared to face the challenges of technology-based education. This assistance is expected to increase access to better learning facilities.
In addition, local wisdom-based education has also begun to be implemented in various regions in Papua. This is important to maintain the cultural identity of the local community while increasing the relevance of education to their daily lives. With this approach, it is hoped that students can better understand their surroundings and be able to develop their potential according to the needs and conditions of their area.
In the health sector, in order to improve the welfare of the Papuan people, a community-based approach is also one of the strategies implemented. Community-based health programs actively involve the community in maintaining their own health. Training for health cadres, education about healthy lifestyles, and increasing awareness of the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness are part of the government’s efforts to improve the quality of health of the Papuan people in a sustainable manner.
The government also continues to increase cooperation with various international institutions to obtain support in improving health services in Papua. Various aid programs and grants from world health organizations have been utilized to increase the capacity of medical personnel, provide more modern medical equipment, and develop various initiatives that can improve maternal and child health in this area. According to the Head of the Jayapura Health Office, Dr. Andi Surya said that health promotion experts have a strategic role in building public awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. They are also responsible for designing health programs that can improve the quality of life of the community.
