Mayday Celebration Momentum for Improving Workers’ Welfare

Jakarta — The commemoration of International Labor Day (May Day) 2025 is interpreted as an important momentum to strengthen the commitment of all parties in improving workers’ welfare and maintaining the sustainability of national industrial growth. Several parties, ranging from industry players to labor unions and local governments, emphasize the importance of synergy in realizing a balance between industrial productivity and workers’ rights.

President Director of PT Surabaya Industrial Estate Rungkut (SIER), Didik Prasetiyono, stated that May Day is not only an event for demonstrations, but also a stage for reflection and joint commitment to build a healthy and sustainable work ecosystem.

“We respect every aspiration conveyed by workers. Improving workers’ welfare is a very important part of strengthening the competitiveness of the national industry,” he said.

According to Didik, workers are a vital element in the industrial ecosystem. Therefore, he emphasized that improving the welfare of workers must not stop, and must be carried out continuously. This must also be accompanied by efforts to create a conducive business climate so that the national industry continues to grow.

In a separate location, the Head of the Transmigration and Manpower Office (Distransnaker) of Southeast Sulawesi Province (Sultra), LM Ali Haswandy, welcomed this year’s Labor Day commemoration which was marked by positive activities and free from friction.

“This momentum must be a glue for togetherness between workers, employers, and the government. Therefore, the commemoration of Labor Day should be held joyfully through social service activities, healthy walks, blood donations, and constructive discussion forums,” said Ali.

He added that Distransnaker Sultra also supports various initiatives that make May Day an event to strengthen dialogue between labor stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the Regional Secretary of the Confederation of Indonesian Prosperous Labor Unions (K-SBSI) Sulawesi, Alvian Pradana Liambo, said that his party invited all labor unions to make Labor Day an event to build dialogue, not just demonstrations.

“To ensure that the celebration of Labor Day runs well and smoothly, the LKS Tripartite Sultra will also form a monitoring team that will be on duty on May 1, 2025, with the hope that the implementation of May Day will run smoothly and be filled with positive activities,” he said.

Alvian also emphasized the importance of a constructive dialogue space so that workers’ aspirations can be conveyed elegantly and productively, and encourage the birth of policies that are more pro-workers.

The commemoration of May Day 2025 also received appreciation because it took place peacefully and full of collaborative spirit. The new spirit shown by workers, employers, and the government is a positive signal for the increasingly mature and balanced employment climate in Indonesia.

With the spirit of mutual cooperation and openness, this year’s commemoration of Labor Day is a strong foothold in fighting for workers’ welfare while maintaining the stability of national industrial growth in the future. [-red]
