Indonesian House of Representatives Focuses on Climate Change and Inclusive Economy Issues at PUIC
The Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Mardani Ali Sera, emphasized that cooperation between Islamic countries in the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) forum is important to create a peaceful and just future for the Islamic world. The 19th PUIC Conference will take place in Jakarta on 12–15 May 2025.
“The Qur’an in Surah Al-Hujurat verse 13 teaches that diversity is strength. Therefore, we must get to know each other, strengthen solidarity, and encourage collaboration between parliaments of Muslim countries,” said Mardani.
He said that this conference was a special moment because it coincided with the 25th anniversary of the founding of PUIC.
“This is not just a commemoration, but also a time to renew our commitment to peace, justice, human rights, and economic development,” he said.
With the theme “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience”, Mardani said that this forum is relevant to facing global challenges such as the climate crisis, geopolitical tensions, and economic uncertainty. He emphasized the importance of strong, transparent, and accountable institutions in Islamic countries.
In addition, issues such as support for Palestine, protection of Muslim minority rights, and South-South cooperation are also on the main agenda.
“We believe that solid collaboration between Islamic countries is a new force to fight for global justice,” concluded Mardani.
Deputy Chairman of the BKSAP DPR RI, Muhammad Husein Fadlulloh, highlighted the importance of encouraging economic collaboration among OIC member countries.
“Indonesia has great potential in the halal industry, especially in the food and fashion sectors. We want to expand the market and reduce dependence on global economic strength,” he said.
He added that global challenges such as trade wars and political tensions must be faced with cooperation between OIC countries.
“We want to show that the Islamic world economy can grow rapidly if we support each other,” said Husein.
Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Indra Iskandar, ensured that preparations for the conference had reached almost 100 percent.
“We have conducted a thorough check with agencies such as immigration, customs, and Angkasa Pura. There are no gaps that we missed,” he explained.
He said that so far 23 countries have confirmed their attendance, with a total of 279 delegates. The 19th PUIC is expected to be attended by 500 to 600 participants from 54 member countries and international organizations.
