Iran Shows High Enthusiasm to Attend the 19th PUIC Session in Jakarta

Jakarta – Iran has shown high enthusiasm in attending the 19th Session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) or the Parliamentary Session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which will be held at the parliament complex, Jakarta, on 12-15 May 2025.

This was stated by the Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Mardani Ali Sera, who said that Iran had even prepared the presence of a large number of delegates as a form of their seriousness. A total of 62 delegates from Iran will attend, including 15 members of parliament led directly by the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament.

“And that requires a lot of technical arrangements for how their media connects with our Parliament’s media, their protocols connect with our protocols, who will pick them up, who will receive them,” explained Mardani.

Interestingly, the Iranian delegation is scheduled to arrive using a private jet, which is another indication of the country’s high commitment to actively participate in the annual session which is an important forum for the parliaments of Islamic countries.

Not only attending the official forum, Iran has also submitted a request to hold a bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, and the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani. “We are working on it, and hopefully it can be realized soon,” said Mardani.

According to Mardani, Iran’s enthusiasm is in line with the positive trend of other OIC member countries. Of the total 54 member countries, 34 countries have confirmed their attendance with a total of 429 delegates. Not only that, 8 of the 11 countries with observer status have also stated their readiness to attend.

“This will be one of the biggest events ever held in the Indonesian House of Representatives,” he said. He compared it to the previous Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which was held at a hotel, while this PUIC was held directly at the Indonesian House of Representatives complex, which presented its own challenges, especially in technical and protocol aspects.

Mardani praised the readiness of the DPR RI Secretariat General team and BKSAP who have worked together with various parties to design in detail the technical aspects of the implementation, starting from media arrangements, protocol flows, to security.

Furthermore, he said that in addition to Iran, countries such as Algeria have also submitted a desire to hold bilateral meetings with high-ranking Indonesian officials. This shows that the PUIC session is not only a multilateral diplomacy forum, but also opens up strategic bilateral cooperation space.

“With that, many investments come in, the economy develops, our human resources increase. Those are the homework that we are trying to highlight so that all countries can really work hard to show prosperity for the community,” he concluded.

The 19th PUIC session is expected to be a momentum to strengthen Indonesian parliamentary diplomacy and strengthen cooperation between Islamic countries in various strategic sectors, including development, peace, and people’s welfare. The active presence of Iran and other countries is a strong signal that this forum is increasingly getting an important place in global diplomacy.
