Hosting, Indonesia Welcomes the 19th PUIC Delegation
Jakarta – The House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) hosted the 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC (PUIC), which took place from 12 to 15 May 2025 at the DPR Building, Jakarta. This event also became a momentum to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the founding of PUIC which has been active since 1999.
The Speaker of the DPR RI, Puan Maharani, stated that hosting this conference was not only an administrative honor, but also an important opportunity for Indonesia to demonstrate the diplomatic leadership of the Islamic world that prioritizes democracy, inclusiveness, and concrete solutions.
“We are ready to warmly welcome the delegation and make this event a diplomatic event that goes beyond ceremonial,” said Puan.
Puan also emphasized that this conference aims to strengthen solidarity between OIC countries and encourage the role of parliaments in facing global challenges. PUIC aims to strengthen cooperation between parliaments of OIC member countries in the political, economic, social, and cultural fields.
Indonesia, which currently serves as the 19th PUIC President, carries the theme “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience” emphasizing the importance of strong and transparent governance in strengthening the resilience of the Islamic world.
In the conference, Puan hopes that important issues such as Palestinian independence and regional peace can be the focus of discussion.
“Parliamentary diplomacy requires real action to face global challenges,” she said.
It is estimated that around 500 participants from OIC member countries, including a number of observer countries, will take part in this conference. Puan also highlighted that the presence of parliamentary leaders, including from ASEAN countries such as Malaysia, shows the success of the PUIC in Indonesia.
She hopes that this event can strengthen relations between OIC member countries and encourage more coordinated cooperation in various fields.
Puan said that the spirit of global solidarity that was once reflected in the Asia Africa Conference (KAA) 70 years ago will be the main foundation in the implementation of the PUIC meeting this time.
Thus, he hopes that PUIC 2025 will be a forum to fight for humanitarian values and create a more just and sovereign Islamic world.
Meanwhile, Iran has shown great enthusiasm to attend the conference, sending 62 delegates, including their parliament speaker.
