PUIC 2025 Raises Governance Issues as Strategic Agenda of OIC Countries

Jakarta – The 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC) which took place on 12-15 May 2025 at the Indonesian Parliament Building, Jakarta, raised governance issues as the main agenda.

Carrying the theme “PUIC Silver Jubilee – Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience”, this conference marked the 25th anniversary of the establishment of PUIC since 1999 in Tehran.

The Chairman of the BKSAP DPR RI, Mardani Ali Sera, emphasized the importance of implementing good governance in OIC countries.

“We want to show that Indonesia is not only a friendly host, but also brings real contributions on how good governance and strong institutions can be widely applied in Islamic countries,” he said.

According to Mardani, the theme was chosen because the majority of OIC members are still in the development stage.

Mardani said that Indonesia also invited the Prime Ministers of Singapore and Malaysia to share experiences in building credible institutions and accountable governance systems.

“If we meet again in the next forum, we hope to be better countries, because we have a strong foundation: transparency, accountability, and fair governance,” he added.

The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, stated that this conference is a strategic moment that reflects Indonesia’s leadership in the Islamic diplomacy arena.

“Hosting PUIC 2025 is not just about organizing an event, but also showing Indonesia’s moral leadership in the Islamic world,” said Puan.

She emphasized that the Indonesian House of Representatives is ready to be a bridge for cooperation between parliaments of Islamic countries in facing global challenges, including the Palestinian struggle and the humanitarian crisis.

“PUIC is not just a ceremony, but a forum to produce concrete solutions based on parliamentary collaboration,” she said.

Puan also mentioned the momentum of PUIC 2025 which is close to the 70th anniversary of the Asia Africa Conference. She hopes that the spirit of South-South solidarity can be revived through this forum.

Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Indonesian House of Representatives Indra Iskandar ensured that technical preparations for the conference had been carried out thoroughly.

“Coordination with various agencies has been completed. There are no gaps that we leave open,” he said.

To date, more than 500 participants from member countries and international organizations have confirmed their attendance at the conference that will strengthen the role of the Islamic world parliament in global development.
