Tightening Supervision, Government Successfully Reduces Online Gambling Transactions
Jakarta – The government’s firm efforts to tighten supervision of the digital space have yielded positive results. The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemenkomdigi) recorded a significant decline in financial transactions related to online gambling practices.
In the first quarter of 2025, the value of online gambling transactions was recorded at IDR 47 trillion, down drastically from IDR 90 trillion in the same period the previous year. This decline shows the government’s commitment to eradicating one of the serious threats in the digital world.
The Director General of Digital Space Supervision of Kemenkomdigi, Alexander Sabar, said that steps to strengthen supervision and cross-agency cooperation were key to reducing the number of transactions.
“Online gambling transactions have decreased significantly, more than 80% compared to last year’s data,” said Alexander when giving a statement at the Kemenkomdigi office.
According to Alexander, this decline cannot be separated from intensive collaboration with the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), law enforcement officers, and other ministries and institutions. He emphasized that the government is not only focused on blocking content, but also continues to strengthen infrastructure and governance of supervision by utilizing the latest technology.
“We continue to strive to reduce public exposure to this practice. Adaptive and data-based supervision is our main weapon,” he added.
However, the Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, reminded that the eradication of online gambling still has a lot of work left. She emphasized the importance of improving regulations that are not only responsive, but also systematic and sustainable.
“We still have a lot of homework. In the future, our focus will not only be on taking action and blocking content, but also improving regulations to be more systematic and sustainable,” Meutya explained in her written statement.
Meutya also expressed her appreciation to all elements of society who have actively contributed to combating online gambling. Public support, according to her, is very important to foster collective awareness that this practice is damaging the future of the nation, especially the younger generation.
This success is a strong signal that the national strategy to eradicate online gambling is on the right track. By continuing to strengthen cross-sector synergies and prioritizing a technology-based approach, the government is optimistic that it can create a healthier, safer, and more productive digital space for all levels of society. Continued support from the public is an important foundation in maintaining the consistency and effectiveness of future policies.
