19th PUIC Conference Affirms Indonesia’s Commitment to Global Environmental Issues
Jakarta – Indonesia affirmed its position as a pioneer in environmental diplomacy through the implementation of the 19th Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) Conference held at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, 12–15 May 2025. In the midst of the diplomatic agenda between Islamic countries, the Indonesian Parliament presented an important breakthrough by implementing a plastic-free policy during the conference.
This step is a real form of the Indonesian House of Representatives’ commitment to environmental preservation, while also showing that green environment issues cannot be separated from good governance and strong institutions. The main theme of this year’s conference: “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience.”
The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, said that Indonesia was honored to host the 19th PUIC conference and welcomed the delegates warmly. She emphasized the importance of Indonesia’s role in encouraging international collaboration, including in terms of sustainability.
“Indonesia, through the Indonesian House of Representatives, is ready to be a liaison in encouraging dialogue, cooperation, and change among parliaments of Islamic countries,” said Puan when opening the conference.
This commitment, she continued, is reflected in the implementation of the forum which is not only substantive, but also pays attention to responsibility towards the global environment.
Secretary General of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Indra Iskandar added that this plastic-free policy is not merely symbolic, but a statement of Indonesia’s firm stance. During the conference, no single-use plastic cups or bottles were used. All delegates were provided with refillable tumblers, with drinking water points available in various corners of the event location.
“This is a real commitment that we show directly to all Islamic parliaments in the world present in Jakarta,” said Indra.
This policy received a positive response from the delegates, who appreciated Indonesia’s concrete steps in reducing plastic waste and encouraging an environmentally friendly lifestyle. This initiative also positions Indonesia as an example of sustainable practices that can be adopted by other countries in organizing international forums.
With this approach, the 19th PUIC Conference will not only be a space for diplomacy, but also a reflection of Indonesia’s global leadership that is oriented towards the future of the earth.
