Academics Consider 2025 PUIC Conference as Strategic Momentum to Strengthen Parliamentary Diplomacy
Jakarta – International relations observer Anton Aliabbas assessed that the implementation of the 19th Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) Conference in Jakarta was not just a ceremonial event, but a strategic momentum to strengthen Indonesian parliamentary diplomacy at the global level.
He said that the trust given to the Indonesian House of Representatives as the host was proof of Indonesia’s important role in the Islamic world.
“With the House of Representatives as the host of PUIC, of course, in addition to being able to emphasize the commitment to encourage active participation of parliament in diplomacy, this event also provides an opportunity for Indonesia to continue to strive to convince and strengthen global solidarity for Palestine,” said Anton.
The 19th PUIC Conference was held at the Indonesian Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on 12-15 May 2025 and coincided with the 25th anniversary of the founding of PUIC.
This forum was attended by 500 participants from the parliaments of member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), including the Secretaries General.
Anton said that the target of the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Puan Maharani to encourage concrete solutions in responding to the global crisis and the struggle for Palestinian independence can be achieved if the collective spirit among PUIC members is truly consolidated.
“The target of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani who wants PUIC to find concrete solutions including real support for Palestinian independence so that it can be achieved,” he said.
He also appreciated the DPR’s attention to the issue of gender equality in the forum. “The spirit of the DPR which wants to utilize PUIC to pay attention to women’s participation in Muslim countries also deserves appreciation,” he added.
Similarly, the Secretary General of the Indonesian House of Representatives Indra Iskandar emphasized Indonesia’s role in encouraging the strengthening of OIC parliamentary governance.
“We hope that the PUIC meeting in Indonesia will produce strategic decisions to strengthen the parliaments of Islamic countries in building world civilization and peace,” he said.
This year’s PUIC conference carries the theme Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience and is expected to produce concrete recommendations in facing global challenges.
