Indonesia Encourages OIC Parliamentary Collaboration to Strengthen Institutions and Strategic Policies
Jakarta – The 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC) was officially opened at the Indonesian Parliament Building, Senayan, Jakarta. This international event, which will take place on 12–15 May 2025, is an important momentum for Indonesia in strengthening its strategic role as a facilitator of parliamentary dialogue between Islamic countries.
The series of conference activities began with the 53rd Session of the PUIC Executive Committee, led directly by the Chairperson of the Indonesian Parliament’s BKSAP, Mardani Ali Sera. In the opening, the recitation of the holy verses of the Qur’an by the national qori Muzammil Hasballah gave a spiritual and solemn nuance that strengthened the spirit of togetherness.
“This is an honor as well as a great responsibility for Indonesia to host the 19th PUIC Conference. We want to ensure that this implementation is successful, substantial, and has a real impact in strengthening the solidarity of the Islamic world,” said Mardani Ali Sera.
Mardani Ali Sera said, on the first day a number of representatives of OIC parliamentary countries had set an agenda with the theme ‘Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience’ through a standing committee meeting.
“This momentum marks Indonesia’s strategic role as the center of parliamentary diplomacy in the Islamic world, and confirms the commitment of the Indonesian House of Representatives in strengthening the values of good governance and strong institutions as the main foundation of global resilience,” said Mardani.
In addition, the 19th PUIC standing committee meeting also discussed strengthening the role of Parliament through transparency and accountability. The PUIC meeting, said Mardani, is an important stage for PUIC member countries to unite views and strengthen solidarity in facing the challenges of the modern world.
In a series of bilateral agendas, the Secretary General of the Indonesian House of Representatives Indra Iskandar held a meeting with the Secretary General of the Bahrain Parliament Mohamed Ibrahim Al Sisi Al Buainain. This meeting became the initial space for the development of concrete cooperation between the legislative institutions of the two countries.
“They expressed their desire that the relationship between the Indonesian and Bahraini Parliaments could be further facilitated, both through direct meetings and digital communication. Of course, this is a positive opportunity that we will follow up on,” said Indra Iskandar.
The meeting also discussed the exchange of policy studies, especially related to women and children’s issues. Indra Iskandar emphasized that the Bahraini Parliament’s studies could be collaborated with the research base of the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Expertise Agency.
“They have studies on the issue of mothers and children, and we can respond to the situation in Indonesia. This is a very important potential for collaborative studies,” explained Indra Iskandar.
In addition, both parties agreed to strengthen the parliamentary capacity building program. Although the Bahraini Parliament is bicameral and has fewer members, this actually provides efficiency in the consolidation of ideas and decisions.
“The DPR Secretariat General will convey the results of this meeting to the GKSB Indonesia-Bahrain. We hope that this collaboration can be followed up immediately in the form of a real program,” concluded Indra Iskandar.
By holding the 19th PUIC conference, Indonesia not only demonstrated its readiness as a host, but also as an initiator of strengthening democratic institutions in Islamic countries through inclusive and collaborative dialogue.
