Solidarity of Islamic Parliaments Strengthens, PUIC 2025 Conference Produces Jakarta Declaration

Jakarta – The 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) held at the Indonesian Parliament Building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, from 12 to 15 May 2025, is certain to produce an important document called the Jakarta Declaration.

The Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the Indonesian Parliament, Mardani Ali Sera, said that this declaration would be the main outcome of the international conference. He added that a number of delegates also proposed alternative names for the declaration.

“The outcome of PUIC is that we call it the Jakarta Declaration. But some want to propose the Senayan Declaration, because the venue is in Senayan,” said Mardani.

The declaration that will be produced is expected to reflect the spirit of cooperation between parliaments of OIC member states in advancing good governance and strengthening institutions as pillars of state resilience. This theme is in line with the main theme of this year’s conference, namely Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience.

The 19th PUIC Conference this time has an important meaning because it also coincides with the 25th anniversary or silver jubilee of the organization which was founded in 1999. This event was attended by around 450 delegates from 38 OIC member countries and 10 observer countries.

The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, is scheduled to attend the opening of the PUIC Conference in person on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the Senayan Parliament Complex. President Prabowo’s presence emphasizes Indonesia’s commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and solidarity between Islamic countries.

Mardani also highlighted the reasons for choosing the location for the conference at the DPR RI Building, which is part of the government’s efficiency steps.

“Why is the location in Senayan? Of course it supports Mr. Prabowo’s efficiency program. Yes, we have our own place and can be used,” he explained.

He said that many delegates expressed their admiration for the facilities and atmosphere of the DPR RI Building which were considered strategic and environmentally friendly.

“Comments from most of the delegates were impressed. This complex is big, green, in the middle of the city, and the meeting places are nice,” he added.

With various important agendas held during the four-day event, the 2025 PUIC Conference in Jakarta is expected to strengthen inter-parliamentary collaboration in voicing global strategic issues, especially those related to the Islamic world.

The Jakarta Declaration which will be announced at the closing of the conference is expected to be a joint guideline to strengthen inclusive governance, increase the role of parliament in maintaining global stability, and strengthen solidarity between OIC member countries in facing the challenges of the times.

This conference also confirms Indonesia’s position as a host that is able to organize international meetings with high standards, and play a strategic role in advancing inter-parliamentary diplomacy in the Islamic world.
