Indonesia Responds to Trump’s Import Tariffs by Preparing Innovative Steps
Jakarta – In facing the 32% import tariff policy imposed by US President Donald Trump, Indonesia has chosen a diplomatic and innovative approach to protect its economic interests. This step reflects a strategy that focuses on negotiation and trade diversification, rather than retaliatory measures that could worsen the situation.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that Indonesia will not take retaliatory measures. In fact, the government is trying to strengthen trade relations with the US by increasing imports of US products, including energy and agricultural commodities.
“Indonesia will not take retaliatory measures. On the contrary, the government is trying to strengthen trade relations as part of a strategy to reduce Indonesia’s trade surplus with the US,” said Airlangga.
Professor of the Faculty of Law, Padjadjaran University, Prof. Sinta Dewi Rosadi explained that in an effort to strengthen Indonesia’s position in negotiations, the government needs to offer additional concessions, such as reducing import tariffs for US products, including steel, mining products, and medical equipment.
“This step is expected to open up new investment opportunities from US companies in Indonesia’s energy and manufacturing sectors,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Finance Suahasil Nazara emphasized that the US tariffs should be a warning for Indonesia to accelerate economic reforms and diversify export markets. High dependence on certain markets makes Indonesia vulnerable to protectionist policies of trading partner countries.
“Strategic steps need to be taken immediately to reduce risks, including expanding access to non-traditional markets and increasing the competitiveness of domestic products,” he said.
Indonesia is also exploring opportunities to strengthen trade relations with other countries, including accelerating negotiations on free trade agreements with the European Union and other Asian countries. This step aims to reduce dependence on certain markets and expand market access for Indonesian products.
Overall, Indonesia’s response to US import tariffs reflects a pragmatic and proactive approach. By prioritizing diplomacy, trade diversification, and economic reform, Indonesia seeks to maintain its economic stability and strengthen its position in an increasingly complex global economy.
