Indonesia Leads OIC Parliament, New Direction for Realizing Global Peace

Jakarta, – The baton of leadership of the Union of Parliaments of Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (PUIC) was officially handed over by the Speaker of the Ivory Coast Parliament, Adama Bictogo, to the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, at the 19th PUIC Conference at the Indonesian House of Representatives Building, Jakarta. This handover marks the beginning of a new era of transformative and inclusive leadership from Indonesia in the world Islamic parliament.

The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, said that the Indonesian House of Representatives is committed to making PUIC an effective forum for fighting for peace, justice, and development of the world’s Muslims. She emphasized the importance of strengthening institutions and good governance in facing the current global crisis.

“We want to prove that parliament can play a significant role in creating global solutions, especially for OIC member countries,” she said.

Previously, the Speaker of the Ivory Coast Parliament, Adama Bictogo expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s willingness to become the host and new leader of PUIC. He believes that under Puan Maharani’s leadership, PUIC has become more progressive and responsive to the challenges of the Islamic world.

Deputy Chairperson of the BKSAP DPR RI, Ravindra Airlangga also highlighted the importance of strengthening economic cooperation between OIC countries, especially in the halal trade sector. According to him, currently, intra-OIC trade is still low, and needs to be encouraged through joint policies.

“The potential for the global halal market is very large. If OIC countries can synergize, then this will be the driving force of the Islamic world economy,” he said.

He also added that Indonesia has the advantage of being a country with the largest Muslim population and a halal industry that continues to grow. Therefore, Indonesia’s leadership in PUIC is expected to be the driving force of halal trade between OIC members.

In the forum, Puan Maharani also reiterated Indonesia’s support for the struggle of the Palestinian people.

“We must fight for the right to independence of the Palestinian people who have been oppressed for a long time,” he said.

Not only that, Puan also invited the OIC parliaments to increase women’s participation in politics and leadership.

“Parliament must be an example in promoting equality and empowering women,” she added.

Indonesia’s leadership in PUIC marks a strategic step in realizing solidarity, peace, and prosperity in the Islamic world. With its commitment to good governance, protection of human rights, and strengthening of the halal economy, Indonesia is expected to bring a breath of fresh air to the future of OIC member countries.
