MUI Supports President Prabowo in Realizing Palestinian Independence Through Two-State Solution
JAKARTA – The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) emphasized its support for President Prabowo Subianto who consistently fights for Palestinian independence, including recognizing Israel if the country first recognizes Palestinian independence.
MUI emphasized that the statement cannot be interpreted as a form of support for Israel, but rather part of a diplomatic strategy to defend the rights of the Palestinian people.
Head of the MUI International Cooperation Relations Division, Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, stated that President Prabowo’s stance is in line with the commitment of Indonesia and Muslims to fight for Palestinian independence.
“MUI supports the government because the government supports Palestine and does not support Israel, because Israel colonizes and destroys. This is in line with the results of the MUI fatwa ulama ijtimak,” he said in a written statement, Thursday (29/5/2025).
Sudarnoto explained that the struggle to defend Palestine is essentially to free the nation from Israeli colonization. Therefore, he considered that President Prabowo’s statement should be understood as a form of pressure on Israel to stop colonization, not support for the existence of the country.
“If Israel no longer colonizes, all troops withdraw from Gaza, all land that has been forcibly seized by Israel is returned, all Palestinian prisoners are released, then there is no reason for Indonesia to hate Israel,” he said.
However, the MUI made an important note. If diplomatic relations are opened one day, Indonesia must still stand firm in defending justice and international law.
“Israel must be punished in accordance with international law and Netanyahu must be forcibly arrested for committing a very terrible crime as ordered by the ICC,” said Sudarnoto.
Previously, President Prabowo said that Indonesia remains committed to supporting Palestinian independence.
“Indonesia views that only the Two State Solution, independence for the Palestinian people, is the only way to achieve true peace,” in a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, Wednesday (28/5).
