Situation Under Control, National Army and Police Ensure Wamena is Safe Post-OPM Terror

Papua Pegunungan — The security situation in Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, Papua, is confirmed to remain under control following the shooting carried out by an armed separatist group from the Free Papua Movement (OPM) on Wednesday night, May 28, 2025, in front of the Wamena Regional Hospital.

In response to the incident, the TNI and Polri moved quickly to ensure the situation remained safe and conducive. The Head of Information for the XVII/Cenderawasih Military Command, Colonel of Infantry Candra Kurniawan, stated that the TNI would conduct routine patrols with the Polri in the Wamena area.

This step is part of the commitment to maintaining security stability in the community and preventing potential further disturbances.

“We have held a coordination meeting with the Jayawijaya Regency Government and other Forkopimda elements on May 29 to strengthen cross-sector synergy in maintaining regional conduciveness,” said Colonel Candra.

He emphasized that the presence of officers in the field is a real form of state protection to ensure the security of the entire community.

The same commitment was conveyed by the Commander of Kodim 1702/Jayawijaya, Lieutenant Colonel Reza Mamoribo. He emphasized that the TNI fully supports efforts to secure the region and will continue to synergize with the Jayawijaya Police to ensure that public order is maintained. Reza also emphasized that his party will be proactive in assisting the implementation of regional development programs.

“We will prevent all forms of threats as early as possible, so that a sense of security is created in the community,” said Reza in his statement. He said that support for the regional government is part of the TNI’s responsibility in maintaining regional stability for the welfare of the Papuan people.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Cartenz Peace Operation, Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani, regretted the shooting which he called a heinous and inhumane criminal act. He ensured that the perpetrators would be immediately hunted down and processed by law according to applicable provisions.

“We will not remain silent. Law enforcement against the perpetrators will be a priority,” said Faizal. He also invited the public to remain calm, not to be provoked, and to entrust the handling of this case entirely to law enforcement officers.

The TNI and Polri continue to strengthen patrols and monitoring of the area to ensure long-term security stability. The presence of the state through its apparatus is believed to be able to restore the sense of security of the community and prevent the movement of armed groups that often spread terror in the mountainous region of Papua.
