Collaborative Approach Effectively Prevents Forest and Land Fires
Banjarmasin — The threat of forest and land fires (karhutla) continues to be a serious concern in a number of vulnerable areas in Indonesia. In response to this, various parties are implementing a more effective collaborative approach in preventing and handling this annual disaster. The police, forestry agencies, and local governments are working together to strengthen preparedness in the field.
The Head of the Central Kalimantan Regional Police, Inspector General Iwan Kurniawan, emphasized that all of his staff are ready to be deployed to tackle forest and land fires from the Regional Police to the Sector Police. He stated that he had given special instructions for personnel to be on full alert in anticipating fires in the Bumi Tambun Bungai area.
“I have instructed all personnel at all levels to be on alert in preventing and anticipating forest and land fires,” said Inspector General Iwan Kurniawan.
Furthermore, Inspector General Iwan emphasized that handling forest and land fires cannot be done alone. Cross-agency synergy and active community participation are important components in reducing the potential for land fires. He emphasized the need for good coordination, real-time information sharing, and citizen involvement in the early warning system.
In the South Sumatra region, similar efforts have also been intensified. The Head of the Forest Fire Control Center (Dalkarhut) of the Ministry of Forestry, Ferdian Kristanto, said that four areas in the province have been declared on alert status for forest and land fires. However, according to him, this alert status is not only about formal preparedness, but also real readiness in the field.
“So it’s not just about preparedness, but also considering the potential and predictions that could occur. Personnel, equipment, and supplies must be maximized,” explained Ferdian.
Meanwhile, the Banjarmasin City Government through the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has also taken concrete steps. The Head of the Banjarmasin City BPBD, Thamrin, said that his party routinely checks all firefighting equipment and ensures the readiness of personnel.
“We also monitor the weather and hotspots 24 hours non-stop, especially in areas prone to forest and land fires,” said Thamrin.
In addition to technical readiness, BPBD Banjarmasin also prioritizes public education through various information channels, including social media. Socialization regarding the dangers and prevention of forest and land fires is strengthened to build collective public awareness.
“Hopefully this year’s dry season will be friendly. But if a fire occurs, we are ready,” he added optimistically.
The steps taken reflect a collaborative cross-sector approach that is considered to be the most effective strategy in dealing with the threat of forest and land fires. The emphasis on prevention, readiness of equipment and personnel, and the active role of the community are the main components that determine success in maintaining environmental sustainability and the safety of residents from the dangers of forest and land fires.
