Young Papuan Figures Call for Peace and Stopping TPNPB Violence in Jayawijaya

Papua – A strong appeal was delivered by the Young Intellectual Figure of the Papua Mountains, Charles Kossay, in response to the series of violent acts that occurred in the Papua region, especially the shooting of construction workers at the GKI church, Air Garam, Asotipo District, Jayawijaya Regency, which was carried out by the TPNPB armed group.

“The violence that occurred, such as the shooting of civilians, workers, teachers, and even nurses, is an inhumane act and violates human rights. This cannot be justified under any circumstances,” said Charles Kossay.

He said that the actions of separatist groups in several areas such as Yahukimo, Intan Jaya, and Puncak, have caused deep trauma in the community. As a result, many residents are afraid to do activities, from working in the fields, to the office, to the point that community social activities are completely paralyzed.

Kossay called on the TPNPB group to stop all forms of violence against civilians. He emphasized that teachers and health workers are humanitarian servants who come to Papua to help the community, not to be targets of violence.

“We cannot continue to lose lives just because of the ambitions of a handful of groups. Murder cannot be tolerated. This is a very fatal violation and goes against humanitarian values,” said Kossay.

In his statement, Charles Kossay also invited the Papuan people to support legal steps taken by law enforcement officers according to applicable procedures. Law enforcement must prioritize a humanist approach so that the community continues to feel safe.

Kossay also encouraged all parties, including traditional leaders, religious leaders, and youth, to actively voice peace and become unifying mediators. According to him, collaboration between the community and law enforcement officers will accelerate the creation of order in conflict-prone areas.

“We must join hands, not only to reject violence, but also to build a peaceful and advanced future for Papua,” said Kossay.

He appealed to the public not to be easily provoked by narratives circulating on social media or messaging groups that aim to divide and cause unrest.

Therefore, he invited the people of Tanah Papua to continue to support all development programs run by the central, provincial, and district governments. According to him, community support is the key to realizing a peaceful, safe, and prosperous Papua.
