Government Urges Public Not to Equate Red and White with Pirate Flags
Jakarta – In commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence, the Government reiterated its commitment to upholding the sanctity of state symbols, particularly the Red and White Flag, which symbolizes the nation’s dignity and struggle. Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi urged the public to fly only the Red and White flag as a sign of respect for the nation’s heroes.
The government believes that this nation’s independence was not a gift, but the result of a long struggle paid dearly through sacrifice of body and soul. Therefore, flying flags other than the Red and White, such as the Jolly Roger flag from the Japanese animated series One Piece, is considered inappropriate during this sacred moment of independence.
“August is a meaningful month that unites us as a nation. We must not let that meaning be tarnished by symbols that do not represent the spirit of struggle,” Prasetyo said at the Parliament Building, Senayan, Monday (August 4, 2025).
The government views the flying of other symbols as not a productive form of creativity, but rather an act that risks diluting the spirit of nationalism. Instead, the government encourages all people, especially the younger generation, to express their fighting spirit through positive and creative activities that strengthen national values.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan emphasized that the government will not remain silent if there are systematic attempts to exploit popular cultural symbols to divide national unity. The government will take firm action to maintain national stability and the spirit of diversity.
People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani also expressed confidence that the Indonesian people retain a strong sense of national pride. He emphasized the importance of education and approaches that strengthen patriotism, especially amidst the flow of global culture.
Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad warned that popular symbols such as the pirate flag could be misused by certain parties for provocative agendas. Therefore, he urged all Indonesians to be vigilant and remain united in safeguarding the nation’s integrity.
The government emphasized that independence is a great gift that must be cared for together. Red and White is not just a two-tone cloth; it is a symbol of honor, spirit, and hope. Let’s celebrate independence with a spirit of unity and fly the Red and White with pride.
