Pirate Flags Shouldn’t Be a Social Trend
Jakarta – The commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia is an important opportunity to reaffirm the spirit of nationalism. A series of activities under the Merdeka Jaya 2025 Central Operation, from the state ceremony at the State Palace to the People’s Party at the National Monument (Monas), proceeded safely, orderly, and smoothly.
The Head of the Jayapura Regency branch of the Barisan Merah Putih (BMP), Yakob Fiobetauw, emphasized the importance of preserving the meaning of independence and preventing it from being mixed with popular culture.
“The momentum of the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia should be used as an opportunity to foster a spirit of nationalism, not to mix state symbols with popular entertainment,” he said.
Yakob believes that the pirate flags flown by some people are merely entertainment symbols and should not be associated with the commemoration of independence. He emphasized that the Red and White flag must remain the sole symbol of national unity.
Firman Soebagyo, Deputy Chairman of the Golkar Faction, echoed this sentiment. He believes that raising the One Piece-style skull flag could potentially create provocation and disrupt stability.
“These are provocative methods aimed at overthrowing the government; they are unacceptable,” Firman emphasized. He urged the younger generation not to get caught up in popular culture trends that actually erode patriotism.
On the other hand, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that the momentum of independence should not be limited to ceremonial celebrations.
“The momentum of the 80th anniversary of independence must be a spirit to strengthen unity. The National Police, along with all stakeholders, are committed to maintaining security, order, and the smooth flow of public life,” the National Police Chief emphasized.
This year’s celebration demonstrates that the spirit of togetherness among the Indonesian people remains well-maintained. With the support of security forces and public awareness, the situation remains conducive.
The main message being emphasized is that the spirit of independence must be stronger than mere popular culture trends. The independence that heroes fought for with blood and sacrifice must continue to be maintained with pure nationalism and sincere love for the homeland.
