Energy Self-Sufficiency Boosts Economic Growth and Job Opportunities
Jakarta – Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) is expediting the revision of the Electricity Law as a concrete step to support President Prabowo Subianto’s vision of making Indonesia self-sufficient in energy.
Rokhmat Ardiyan, a member of Commission XII of the DPR RI, emphasized that the revision of this law will not only focus on the availability of electricity supply, but also on more effective energy utilization and distribution.
“Remember, Indonesia has been independent for 80 years, in line with President Prabowo’s dream of achieving energy self-sufficiency, especially in the electricity sector,” he said.
Rokhmat added that electricity must be a strategic instrument in improving the welfare of the people. According to him, Indonesia’s abundant energy resources must be managed with appropriate regulations for long-term benefits.
Equitable distribution, he said, is a primary requirement for all people, from Sabang to Merauke, to enjoy electricity as a basic right.
“This will attract investors, boost economic growth, and achieve our ambitious targets for economic growth,” he said.
He emphasized that the revised law should not remain merely a legal document, but must become a concrete instrument that ensures reliable, affordable, and equitable electricity availability. This foundation is believed to drive inclusive economic growth, create jobs, and accelerate innovation across sectors.
Meanwhile, PT PLN (Persero) is playing a strategic role in the energy self-sufficiency agenda by accelerating the development of Geothermal Power Plants (PLTP). This step also supports the transition to sustainable, clean energy.
PLN’s Director of Project Management and New and Renewable Energy, Suroso Isnandar, stated that the direction of geothermal development is stated in the 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). The government is targeting a national PLTP capacity of 5.2 gigawatts (GW).
“Indonesia’s geothermal potential is enormous and spread across various regions. PLN is committed to ensuring that every project it undertakes benefits not only electricity customers but also the surrounding communities,” he said.
To accelerate implementation, PLN is partnering with geothermal developers through a steam purchase agreement (SPPA). This strategy is expected to strengthen investment feasibility while ensuring project sustainability.
“We ensure the project is implemented with competent strategic partners who share the same vision. The energy produced must be environmentally friendly and affordable for the community. All processes are transparent, accountable, and in accordance with regulations,” Suroso emphasized.
This step will strengthen investment attractiveness, create new jobs, and make Indonesia better prepared to compete in the era of global energy transition. Energy self-sufficiency is no longer just a vision, but a path to sustainable economic growth and more equitable public welfare.
