Government Steps to Prepare Independent Investigation Team Guarantee Transparency and Accountability in Handling Demonstrations

Jakarta – The government has confirmed that it is taking serious steps to respond to the dynamics of the demonstrations that occurred at the end of August 2025. President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that the government remains open to dialogue with the public and is ready to follow up on the aspirations expressed, including the demand for the formation of an Independent Investigation Team to thoroughly investigate the deaths of Affan Kurniawan and other victims.

President Prabowo emphasized that the public’s demands need to be carefully studied. According to him, there are a number of normative points that can be discussed together in a healthy manner through negotiations and open debate. “We studied them; some are reasonable and can be discussed. There are things that are normative and can be handled well through negotiations and healthy debate,” he said.

One of the demands that received the most attention was the formation of an Independent Investigation Team. President Prabowo considered the idea logical and worthy of follow-up. He expressed his support for further study of the discourse, including the mechanisms and structure of the team to be formed.

“I think an independent investigation team makes sense. We’ll just have to see what form it takes,” Prabowo added.

President Prabowo emphasized that every step the government takes will always be based on the mandate of the 1945 Constitution. This, he said, is the primary basis for maintaining justice, transparency, and accountability in the state.

“I will carry out the duties assigned to me by the Constitution,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) also moved quickly to respond to public pressure. Rieke Diah Pitaloka, a member of the DPR’s Public Aspirations Agency, revealed that the process of forming an Independent Investigation Team is currently underway.

“The investigation team is being formed, it’s underway,” she said.

The call for the formation of this team emerged as part of the 17+8 demands that have been circulating in the public sphere. These demands require the government to meet 17 short-term demands before a deadline of September 5, 2025, and eight long-term demands within a one-year deadline. One pressing issue is a transparent investigation into the Affan Kurniawan case and all victims of violence by security forces during the demonstrations on August 28–30, 2025.

The concrete steps taken by the government and the House of Representatives (DPR) in preparing this independent team demonstrate the state’s commitment to ensuring transparency of information, justice, and the protection of citizens’ rights. With the presence of an independent team, it is hoped that public trust in the process of handling the demonstrations will be strengthened.

The government is committed to responding to every public aspiration with concrete action, without compromising the stability and direction of national development. Transparency and accountability are the foundation for preventing similar incidents from recurring, while also strengthening the principles of healthy democracy in Indonesia.
