Papuan Figures : Don’t Be Easily Provoked by Calls for Anarchic Demonstrations

WEST PAPUA – Maintaining security and peace in Papua is a shared responsibility of all elements of society. Amidst the dynamic national situation, various Papuan leaders are urging the public not to be easily provoked by calls for anarchic demonstrations that could potentially harm themselves and the region.

The General Chairperson of the Papuan Muslim Council Coordinating Body of West Papua Province, Abdul Rashid Fimbai, emphasized the importance of building unity above differences. “Let’s make Manokwari a shared home that is safe, peaceful, and prosperous for all its people, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or other backgrounds,” he said. He added, “Let’s maintain Manokwari as a big house where everyone is a brother and deserves protection to live in security and peace.”

Valentinus Kabes, Head of the Fakfak Regency LMA, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the public should not be trapped by anarchic actions. “Express your aspirations peacefully, refrain from anarchic actions, and always comply with applicable laws. This is important to prevent us all from doing things that could harm ourselves or others,” he said. Valentinus also added his belief that the Papuan people possess noble values. “I am confident and believe that we are good, cultured, and ethical citizens, so we will not be provoked. Let us cultivate brotherhood, strengthen ties, and bring peace.”

Meanwhile, Ismail Sireffa, a member of the West Papua BP3OKP Political, Legal, and Security Working Group (Pokja Polhukam), emphasized the importance of stability for development. “Let us maintain security stability so that this country can be stable. But let us work together to resolve security issues wisely and prudently to achieve development goals in the region,” he said.

From Teluk Bintuni, Fauzan Fimbay, Chair of the United Risaturi Intellectual Forum, also urged the public to remain vigilant against issues that could divide. “I urge all residents of Teluk Bintuni to maintain tolerance between religious communities and ethnic groups. We must not be easily provoked by national issues, but let us work together to maintain security in the region,” he emphasized.

Customary leaders also expressed similar views. Biak Tribal Chief Erens Wakum reminded, “I urge all tribal chiefs in Papua and the archipelago to maintain peace, order, and security in our communities.” The Moile Tribal Chief of the Arfak Mountains added, “I urge the community to maintain order and security. There must be no anarchic demonstrations, so that the regency’s reputation can be maintained.”

This joint appeal by Papuan leaders demonstrates a strong commitment to maintaining peace and unity. Papua needs stability, not unrest. Only by creating harmony and security can development proceed and the people’s well-being be achieved.
