The Public Should Not Be Trapped by Provocative Narratives About the Nepal Unrest
By: Garvin Reviano
In today’s era of global connectivity, any information circulating in the digital space can quickly shape public perception, both positive and negative. The narrative about the unrest in Nepal is a clear example of how regional issues can be turned into provocations that have the potential to influence the views of people in other countries, including Indonesia. Situations like this teach us the importance of critically analyzing and interpreting information. The public should not be easily trapped by provocative narratives about the unrest, as the impact can cause unrest, divide unity, and even trigger destructive actions that are not truly relevant to the context of our daily lives.
Nepal, as a country with its own political and social dynamics, certainly experiences various internal challenges. However, these issues are actually part of their democratic process and nation-building. Provocations spread on social media often distort facts, create frightening narratives, and even add falsehoods to enhance the dramatic effect. However, the truth of an event can only be understood with a balance of information and reliable sources. This is where the public is required to be wise, so as not to be easily swayed by provocations deliberately spread by parties seeking to profit from social instability.
The Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, stated that although the latest information indicates that no Indonesian citizens were involved in the riots, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to remind all Indonesian citizens in Nepal to increase their vigilance. They are advised to avoid crowds and always monitor official information from local authorities. Furthermore, the public is urged not to be provoked by the events in Nepal.
The Indonesian people need to realize that every nation has its own path in navigating political and social dynamics. What happened in Nepal should be viewed as a valuable lesson, not as a tool to foster fear or distrust of our own government. Instead, amidst the constant provocations of unrest, we can reaffirm our commitment to maintaining stability, harmony, and mutual cooperation, which have long been hallmarks of the Indonesian nation. By doing so, we will not allow ourselves to be drawn into the vortex of provocative and destructive information.
Narratives of provocative unrest are often designed to create the illusion that a country is on the brink of collapse. This tactic can spread to communities in other countries if they lack strong literacy skills. When people begin to believe unverified rumors, a domino effect will occur: unrest, suspicion among citizens, and even weakening trust in state institutions. In fact, what is needed now is precisely the opposite: building optimism, strengthening social solidarity, and channeling public energy into productive activities that benefit the common good.
Meanwhile, Sukamta, Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), stated that the unrest in Nepal presents a valuable lesson and a profound reflection for all. He also stated that the lesson to be learned from the unrest is that government officials and politicians must be mindful of their attitudes and statements to avoid hurting the public’s feelings.
Avoiding the trap of provocation does not mean turning a blind eye to reality. We still need to monitor global developments, including what is happening in Nepal. However, our response must be intelligent and proportionate. Rather than swallowing the unrest narrative at face value, the public can use it as a reflection to strengthen the nation’s resilience. For example, how can we learn to manage differences, prevent potential conflicts, and build a transparent communication system between the government and the people? In this way, the experiences of other countries serve as a mirror, not a debilitating trap for provocation.
On the other hand, the government, media, and educational institutions have a vital role to play in providing digital literacy education to the public. Wise social media campaigns, information verification training, and efforts to promote balanced journalism are all strategic steps to protect the public from attacks by provocative narratives. An intelligent society will choose to discuss matters based on data, rather than emotion. A mature society will prioritize the common good over spreading unsubstantiated rumors.
