After Visiting Japan, President Prabowo Departs for the UN General Assembly on a Mission of Peace
Following a visit to the Indonesian Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, President Prabowo departed for New York, United States, on Saturday (September 20).
Former Assistant Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan, Keiichi Ichikawa, and Ambassador in Charge of the Kansai Region, Yasushi Misawa, accompanied the eighth Indonesian President to see him off at Kansai Airport in Osaka.
The Head of State’s departure for New York was to attend the 80th United Nations (UN) General Assembly, on a mission of global peace and justice.
The President’s direct attendance at the international forum marked Indonesia’s return to the world’s main stage after more than a decade.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya emphasized the forum’s importance to Indonesian diplomacy.
“According to the schedule received, President Prabowo will deliver the third speech at the UN General Debate on September 23, 2025, after the Presidents of Brazil and the President of the United States,” he said.
Teddy explained that the General Assembly is a strategic opportunity for Indonesia to assert its position as a leader in the Global South, with an agenda of reforming global governance to make it more just and inclusive.
The founder of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), Dino Patti Djalal, believes that President Prabowo’s presence at the forum continues a long tradition of family diplomacy.
“We hope President Prabowo will continue to champion global multilateralism, like the late Prof. Sumitro,” he said.
Dino recalled that Prof. Sumitro played a crucial role in the early days of Indonesian independence at the UN, including garnering international support for the recognition of Indonesian sovereignty.
Hamdan Hamedan, an expert from the Government Communications Agency, emphasized the strategic impact of the President’s speech at the upcoming General Assembly.
“When the room is full, the world’s attention is on him, and the message of the speech forms the main tone of the UN general debate,” he explained.
Hamdan added that President Prabowo’s in-person appearance after a 10-year absence is a crucial opportunity to strengthen Indonesia’s position as a great nation with a strong commitment to global peace.
In addition to delivering the speech, the President is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders and continue his state visits to Canada and the Netherlands.
This agenda is expected to strengthen international cooperation, in line with Indonesia’s ongoing independent and active foreign policy.
With a mission of global peace and justice, President Prabowo’s presence at the UN General Assembly reaffirms Indonesia’s determination to be a significant voice for a more peaceful, just, and inclusive world. (*)
