Government Responds to 17+8 People’s Demands, Promises to Respect Civilian Supremacy
Jakarta – The government has reaffirmed its commitment to following up on the 17+8 People’s Demands that emerged since the demonstrations at the end of August 2025.
Several officials firmly conveyed the government’s official stance that the people’s voices are a mandate that must be respected.
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, emphasized that the government will not ignore the people’s aspirations. He considered these demands an important message that must be implemented.
“As demands of the people, the government, mandated by the people, will certainly respond positively to the demands and desires of its people. It is impossible for the government to ignore these demands,” said Yusril.
According to him, the government is committed to making civil supremacy the primary foundation in responding to public aspirations.
This is in line with the principle of democracy that places the people as the holders of sovereignty.
From an economic perspective, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, highlighted the 16th point of demand regarding the prevention of mass layoffs.
He emphasized that this step is the government’s responsibility.
“Preventing mass layoffs is part of the government’s responsibility,” said Airlangga at the Presidential Palace Complex.
Airlangga also explained that the government is preparing policies to expand employment opportunities.
“We said earlier that if deregulation continues in several industries in Java, it will create more than 100,000 jobs. We are preparing this,” he added.
Meanwhile, Wiranto, Special Advisor to the President for Political and Security Affairs, emphasized that President Prabowo Subianto has directly heard the people’s aspirations.
However, he said, fulfilling all demands will take time.
“Some of the demands of the protesters, as requested by the people, are of course always listened to by the President, and the President has certainly listened to them and fulfilled them as much as possible. Of course, fulfilling each demand is done in stages to ensure optimal results and avoid negative impacts,” Wiranto said at the Palace Complex.
With statements from Yusril, Airlangga, and Wiranto, the government emphasized that the 17+8 People’s Demands will be addressed through concrete policies.
While not all points can be realized simultaneously, the government promises to maintain stability, create jobs, and respect civilian supremacy as a key pillar of democracy.
