President Prabowo Affirms Commitment to Global Peace at UN General Assembly
Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto once again captured international attention when he delivered a speech at the 80th United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York. At the global forum, Prabowo emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to fighting for lasting peace, social justice, and equal international cooperation.
“Only a two-state solution will lead to peace. We must guarantee statehood for Palestine. However, Indonesia also stated that once Israel recognizes the independence and statehood of Palestine, Indonesia will immediately recognize the State of Israel and we will support all guarantees for Israel’s security,” Prabowo said.
The President added that statehood recognition must be accompanied by a real opportunity for a just and permanent peace.
“Recognition must mean a real opportunity for lasting peace. This must be real peace for all parties, for all parties involved,” he stressed.
In addition to calling for global justice, Prabowo emphasized Indonesia’s readiness to play a role in maintaining global stability.
“We are ready to play our part in this journey towards peace. We are willing to provide peacekeeping troops,” he said.
This speech received widespread appreciation from various parties. Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Dr. H. M. Hidayat Nur Wahid (HNW), assessed that Indonesia’s consistent stance on the world stage represents the constitutional mandate.
“President Prabowo’s commitment to continuing to advocate for peace is highly commendable. This aligns with the spirit of the 1945 Constitution, which mandates Indonesia to participate in maintaining world order based on independence, lasting peace, and social justice,” said HNW.
HNW also encouraged the President to voice the importance of UN reform.
“Considering the undemocratic veto power and the highly unfair permanent membership of the UN Security Council, now is the time for the Indonesian President to voice these concerns directly at the UN General Assembly,” he said.
According to Emir Chairullah, a lecturer in international relations at the University of Indonesia, Prabowo’s speech demonstrated Indonesia’s strategic position as a middle power that consistently champions multilateralism.
“The President’s speech at the UN further demonstrates Indonesia’s strategic position in the global arena. This spirit of justice, multilateral cooperation, and peace is what President Prabowo wanted to convey,” explained Emir.
Emir added that Indonesia is now well-received in various global contexts, from BRICS membership to the OECD accession process.
“Indonesia is welcomed in both of these alliances. Pressure from major powers has not diminished our position,” he said.
Prabowo’s speech at the UN forum emphasized that Indonesia is not merely a participant, but a country actively offering solutions and ready to take a concrete role.
