Aware of Provocations on December 1, Government and Authorities Ensure Security Remains Conducive

TIMIKA – As December 1, 2025, approaches, vigilance against potential provocations in several regions of Papua has once again increased. Security forces and local governments in various regencies have reaffirmed their readiness to maintain stability while urging the public to remain calm, carry on with their normal activities, and not be influenced by issues that could disrupt unity. This collective effort is a crucial foundation amidst the intense security dynamics that often arise during this period.

In Timika, the Commander of the 1710/Mimika Military District Command, Lieutenant Colonel M. Slamet Wijaya, revealed on November 25, 2025, that several inland districts, such as Jila, Alama, Hoeya, and Tembagapura, were in the vulnerable and controlled category, but could still be resolved with responsive measures from the authorities.

“The Timika City area and its surroundings are currently in a safe and controlled situation, while the mountainous districts are in a vulnerable and controlled situation,” said Lieutenant Colonel M. Slamet Wijaya.

He explained that the mountainous region is adjacent to a conflict zone, potentially impacted by it. However, intensive coordination with the police, the Indonesian Navy, and the Indonesian Air Force continues to be strengthened to ensure stability is maintained.

The Mimika Military District Command (Kodim) is taking anticipatory measures to mitigate potential disturbances early on.

“We have also received orders from our leadership to anticipate any incidents that could disrupt public order and security. We ask for the support and participation of all levels of society to work together to maintain security so that residents can carry out their activities as usual,” stated Lieutenant Colonel M. Slamet Wijaya.

Following this announcement, the situation in Jila District also came under scrutiny. Recent operations against armed groups have kept authorities on alert to prevent further impacts. However, he stated that their presence is intended to protect, not instill fear.

“The presence of security forces there is not intended to harm the community. We are here purely to protect them,” concluded Lieutenant Colonel M. Slamet Wijaya.

He added that all elements in Papua are expected to strengthen their commitment to nationalism.

“We are all one nation within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” concluded Lieutenant Colonel M. Slamet Wijaya.

Meanwhile, the South Papua Provincial Government is taking different but complementary steps, focusing on strengthening the positive atmosphere leading up to Christmas, which begins on December 1st. South Papua Regional Secretary Ferdinandus Kainakaimu is encouraging the public to maintain a peaceful atmosphere by strengthening Christmas celebrations in four regencies.

“We ask the Christmas committee to immediately issue a circular inviting the public to echo the echo of Christmas in early December,” said Ferdinandus Kainakaimu.

This invitation targets all public facilities, offices, and residential areas to display Christmas decorations to create a warm and even festive atmosphere. The regional government is ensuring that all Christmas activities, including the December 1st parade, run safely and orderly to encourage the public to remain focused on the celebration, which is full of shared values.

The synergy between the authorities and the regional government demonstrates a comprehensive effort to ensure Papua remains safe and peaceful, welcoming December with a spirit of unity.
