Indonesia Focuses on Completing New Rules to Eradicate Online Gambling

Jakarta – The government continues to show its seriousness in eradicating online gambling practices that are increasingly disturbing the public. Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Supratman Andi Agtas said that the Government Regulation (PP) specifically for eradicating online gambling is currently in the process of being harmonized in his ministry. He ensured that the regulation will be completed soon.

“It is currently being harmonized, it will be completed soon. And coincidentally, the Ministry of Law is tasked with carrying out harmonization,” said Supratman when met at the Kemenkumham Office, Jakarta.

He emphasized that eradicating online gambling is the government’s main concern because the social impact is very large. President Prabowo Subianto, continued Supratman, has also given direction for firm steps to be taken to prevent this activity.

“President Prabowo has also emphasized the importance of preventing online gambling because the impact is so great,” he added. Currently, Supratman is still waiting for the final report from the Directorate General of Legislation regarding the substance of the material that is being finalized across ministries.

Previously, the Minister of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid also said that President Prabowo would soon issue a PP that would regulate more firmly the efforts to take action against online gambling. She explained that this new regulation would strengthen the government’s steps in removing content related to the practice.

“The President again discussed the development of handling online gambling, and one of the steps that will be taken in the near future is to issue a regulation in the form of a PP to regulate more firmly the efforts to combat online gambling,” said Meutya after attending a limited meeting at the Presidential Palace.

Meutya added that the government has agreed that every digital platform must comply with applicable regulations. She emphasized that online gambling and pornographic content must be blocked immediately without compromise.

“Handling online gambling will not stop, but will continue to be carried out sustainably. This task is not only our responsibility, but also involves the police, prosecutors, and other parties,” said Meutya.

The government’s swift move has received positive attention from various groups who believe that the PP will become an important legal umbrella in systematic efforts to eradicate online gambling which is increasingly sophisticated and hidden.
